Rully Nere Warmly Welcomes Presence of Papua Football Academy

11 June 2022

Papua Football Academy (PFA), a soccer school cum dormitory for Papuan Sons, will start its journey to scout for the best talents on Cenderawasih Earth at the end of the weekend of this 11 to 12 June. The Papua Football Academy is a soccer academy, materialized by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) due to its concern for sports, particularly in Papua; and will have its headquarter in the Mimika Regency. Former assistant coach to the Indonesian national team, Wolfgang Pikal, will lead the Papua Football Academy talent scouting program.

The presence of the Papua Football Academy is warmly welcomed by Rully Rudolf Nere, an Indonesian soccer legend hailing from Papua. The former Indonesian Persipura midfielder legend in the 1980-ies is confident that the presence of the Papua Football Academy is very beneficial to honing brilliant future talents of Papuan Sons. “More so, since the academy is led by someone of Wolfgang Pikal’s class. He will surely have many ideas to develop soccer in Papua through chosen children entering the Papua Football Academy,” stated Rully Nere in a release to Kompas.co.

For the 65-year old, the presence of the Papua Football Academy will strengthen the position of the Papua Province even more in terms of being a sports province, following the success of PON XX - Pekan Olahraga Nasional – or, National Sport Week 2021 on Cenderawasih Earth last October 2021. “The Papua Football Academy will also be an important part of Desain Besar Pembangunan Olahraga Nasional/DBON, or National Sports Grand Design,” stated Rully Nere, who once served as the Director of Pembinaan Usia Muda PSSI (PSSI Youth Development), for the period covering 2003-to 2007. “The presence of the academy is well and truly spot on time and location,” he said.

The former coach of the Indonesian girls national team is confident that the birth of natural talents in Papua will never cease; it’s just that the Papuan Sons need more facilities and attention from the administrators and coaches in order for said talent to be focused and develop. “Indonesia will be extremely fortunate in having the Papua Football Academy, and PT Freeport Indonesia; where its students will be able to be seriously trained in soccer, while simultaneously receiving formal education,” explained Rully Nere. “Especially since all is free.”  The Indonesian soccer legend hailing from Papua will also be present to assist in the selection process taking place in three cities, namely Timika, Merauke and Jayapura.
