SATP Breaks Two MURI Records with the Noken

29 October 2021

The Papua Taruna Boarding School (SATP) were awarded two world records by the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI). The records were achieved for the ability of students to create 1,000 nokens (traditional bags) with the other record for using 1,014 nokens as school bags. SATP is owned by the Foundation for the Development of the Amungme and Kamoro Communities (YPMAK), which is managed by the Loom Education Foundation (YPL) which is financed by the PT Freeport Indonesia Partnership Fund.

The Indonesian Museum of World Records handed over the achievement plagues for the two records to the respective winners. The program coincided with the 93rd Youth Pledge Day Commemoration on Thursday (10/28) and took place in the SATP sport hall and also during the 2021 Language Month with the team “Learn the Language, Love Culture, Be United,” during which the students were giving a series of amazing performances in various categories like traditional Papuan dances, musical ensembles, Nusantara dances, Marching bands, musical dramas, short films and vocal group Chiquita.

MURI Senior Manager, Awan Raharjo, said in his address that in the eastern part of the country, primarily in Mimika, MURI has already struck 12 records including the two additional ones today.

The records were set not just on a national scale but also on a global scale because of the creativity of SAPT students. “On this day on which we commemorate Youth Pledge Day on the agenda of YPL, SAPT achieved two world records,” Awan said. “”One record for creating nokens by 1000 students and one record to make 1,104 SATP students to use them as school bags.

PT Freeport Indonesia Vice President Community Development, Nathan Kum, explained education and culture are two very important issues at the same time drawing a picture what the noken means to the Amungme tribe. “Children should know the significance of the noken and what it symbolizes, namely sharing, sharing of blessings, sharing of food. We carry food in the noken and when we come across somebody on our path we share the food with him,," said Nathan. By the same token he sends a message to YPMAK and YPL administrators of the SATP to keep culture and science on the curriculum at all times.

“Another thing that children should learn is to be grateful. We should be grateful that PTFI is operating here. Learn to be grateful for being selected to receive a scholarship from YPMAK by virtue of PTFI and be grateful to God for being chosen. For those reasons culture and science must be preserved at all times,” Nathan said.

With the two new records Mimika Regency has achieved 16 MURI records. 14 were made by the Mimika administration in association with PT Freeport Indonesia. The Mimika administration set records between 2011-2019, one for having the highest number of participants in an engraving activity, making the largest carved statue, achieving the highest number of participants in a stone burning festival and two records for having the highest number of participants in a seka dance and wearing of tauri attire. The remaining records were broken by PT Freeport Indonesia within the period 2012-2017. Some of them are the largest participants in the contemporary Kakuru dance, the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony held at an underground mine, the construction and owner of the first copper smelter in Indonesia. In addition, the record for the single largest supplier of copper concentrate and three records at once in 2017 were the construction of mosques and churches located below ground level of approximately 1,700 meters, construction of mosques located at the highest elevation of about 3,800 meters, and mining companies with the most complete development and training. for the local community.
