SATP Road to Mainstage Broadway Jakarta, "Shine Together"

05 March 2024

Timika (4 March 2024) – In Mimika on Thursday (28/2), 20 students from  Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua (SATP) boarding school participated in an activity for interactive personal development training  titled "SATP Road to Mainstage Broadway Jakarta".

"This activity is aimed at expanding the children’s outlooks and mental horizons, and encouraging them to dare to dream and pursue their dream,” SATP Principal Yohana Tnunay said.

She said throughout the full one day of  coaching, the children displayed  exhilaration and were energetically engrossed in the activity.  They had been chosen to participate in the activity through a selection process held internally by the school, in which students showcased their particular  talent and  interest in the field of arts, such as for dancing, acting, singing in a choir,  playing the mellophone, painting, drum playing, poetry, or modern dance. In all, 86 students from  grade 4 (primary school) to grade 8 (middle school)  and ranging in age from 10 to 15 years took part in the selections.

Co-Founder & Program Director of Camp Broadway Indonesia, Adit Marciano said the coaching activity carrying the theme of "Bersinar Bersama" (“Shining Together”) is an interactive personal development workshop conducted in three parts.

The first session was themed "Aku, Mimpi, dan Pelindungku" (“Me, My Dream, and My Protector”); the second session was themed "Aku dan Talentaku" (“Me and My Talent”); and the final session was themed "Aku dan Refleksiku" (“Me and My Reflection”), conducted by Laura Muljadi, an Arts Instructor and Professional Model.

"I must not be discouraged in my endeavor to be of service to Papua and  Indonesia" Class  6E student Monsela Janampa wrote on a star-shaped sheet of paper during the “Me, My Dream, and My Protector” session. This was a session in which students were invited to write about their ambition and what motivated them in their daily life.

"I want to be a Miner, to follow in my father’s footsteps in Tembagapura" Class 8E student  Evarella Hanau wrote on her star-shaped sheet of paper. This session was aimed at inspiring the children and urging them against becoming discouraged from pursuing their dream, through symbols or pictures they draw on their individual star-shaped sheets of paper.

"Me and My Talent” was the second session, which involved interactive game-playing for the children to learn  the basics of theater, including depicting  a character through words and sentences,  expressing through movement and facial mimicry, and attaining harmony in dance movements.

In the “Me and My Reflection” session, the children described what they felt  while participating in the coaching sessions, and were counseled about success, failure, and difficulties that are part of the journey to be made in striving to achieve their ambition.

Camp Broadway Indonesia (CBI) is a venue to coach children and teenagers in  singing, dancing, and acting, packaged in the form of musical theater. CBI is the only formal institution in Indonesia holding a license from Camp Broadway New York.

"In this coming June, Camp Broadway Indonesia will be holding a  six-day Mainstage Broadway Jakarta event where children will be coached on dancing, singing, and acting, and eventually at the end of the coaching period, they will perform onstage for the public. We came to SATP to scout for young talent who will attend the coaching camp in Jakarta,” Adit informed.

Senior Vice President for  Community Development Nathan Kum said SATP is part of social investment by PTFI in commitment made for  the young generations of Papuans.

"In the process of running its mining business,  PTFI consistently addresses the development of the  Amungme, Kamoro, and 5 kindred tribes communities, as well as other Papuans. Providing quality and principled education for Papuan children is a priority,” Nathan affirmed.

In addition to education, PTFI’s social investment encompasses the areas of community empowerment, sociocultural matters, sports, health, and economy.

SATP is a boarding school owned by the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation YPMAK, and is run by the Timika Chapter of the  educational foundation Yayasan Pendidikan Lokon (YPL). In this year, 1,116 children are enrolled in  SATP, comprising 834 primary school students and 282 middle school students.

SATP  has developed  the Kurikulum Merdeka  (Independent Curriculum), an education  curriculum deriving from education based on Papuan contextual life. In offering lessons, SATP refers to the National Curriculum while addressing local wisdom and values under a curriculum based on Papuan contextual life.

YPMAK manages the partnership fund from PT Freeport Indonesia. The organization  YPMAK was established for the development and empowerment of the Amungme, Kamoro, and 5 kindred tribes  (Dani, Damal, Moni, Mee and Nduga) communities in Mimika Regency, specifically in the areas of social affairs, humanities, and religion.

Yohana expressed the hope that through participation  in  Mainstage Broadway Jakarta, SATP students will gain major opportunity to hone their potential in theatrical arts, increase their self-confidence, magnify their talent, meet their peers from other regions,  and perform onstage.
