Selection of Putra Putri Alam Lestari, PTFI: Using Social Media to Influence People Caring for the Environment

11 May 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia held the 15th batch of Putra Alam and Putri Lestari for 2020/2021 as the Environmental Ambassadors in Mimika Regency, Papua, Tuesday (11/5/2021). 15 participants comprised junior high school students in Timika who had previously attended leadership training, public speaking, and caring for the environment.

Senior Manager Environmental Department of PTFI, Esti Gesang Setyadi said, this year's Alam Lestari participant was a special participant. The reason is, in the previous year, this activity was done but on the D-day, the activity was not carried out due to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, this year, for the first time, a whole series of activities from mentoring to nominations were carried out online. "We have to adapt to pandemic conditions," he said in his remarks at the Rimba Papua Hotel, Timika.

According to him, PT Freeport Indonesia continues to try to carry out these activities because it is considered important to provide environmental understanding to children from an early age. "This is provided for children, especially at an early age for how they love and contribute to the environment," he explained.

Gesang explained, in this 15th batch, the alumni had reached 566 people so that he was sure that these alumni could contribute to doing good actions towards the environment. "Providing changes in their environment so that this environment can be maintained and preserved," he said.

In the event themed "Be a part of the solution, not pollution", PTFI hoped that the participants of Alam Lestari 2021 can run environmental programs starting from small things.

For example, saving electricity and water usage, and disposing of garbage in its place. If you can do those things, maybe you can do things a little bigger. "For example, making compost, planting crops, or being able to recycle household waste," said Gesang.

According to him, these things can be started from the individual and then spread to other people, such as family and relatives. Also with the current development of information technology, transmitting these positive things can also be done through social media, so that everyone can have a caring attitude towards the environment. "Youtube, Facebook, TikTok for example, from there you can create programs to make people around us love the environment even more," he exclaimed to the participants.
