Jakarta, January 14, 2025 – Sephia Chrisilla Jangkup, a woman from the Amungme tribe, has officially become the first female doctor after completing her studies and professional education at the Faculty of Medicine, Indonesian Christian University (UKI). Sephia, who is a recipient of PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) educational scholarship program, has a big dream to return and contribute as a healthcare professional in Papua.
"With an increasing number of students from the Amungme and Kamoro tribes pursuing medical education, the hope for improving healthcare quality in Mimika Regency grows stronger. The presence of doctors from local tribes is crucial in understanding the culture and needs of the local community, making healthcare services more effective and relevant," said Director and Executive Vice President of Sustainable Development PTFI Claus Wamafma during his attendance at Sephia's doctor oath ceremony at UKI, Jakarta, recently.
Claus said that Sephia's achievement as the first female doctor from the Amungme tribe is a proud accomplishment and serves as inspiration for young generations in Papua to continue pursuing higher education and contributing to other professional fields.
"Sephia is a concrete example of how educational support can transform the lives of individuals and communities," he said.
For PTFI, he continued, Sephia becomes an encouragement to strengthen their commitment to developing Papua. "This is an important lesson for anyone who wants to build and advance Papua. There are no instant results; to develop our beloved Papua requires long-term commitment. Freeport Indonesia has been and continues to pursue sustainable development in Papua," he said.
Sephia is one of thousands of educational scholarship recipients from PTFI managed by the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK). This educational scholarship represents PTFI's commitment to improving human resource quality around the company's operational areas, supporting the education of young Papuan generations, particularly in Mimika Regency. The total active PTFI scholarships through YPMAK at the end of 2024 reached 4,059 students, ranging from primary education to university level.
YPMAK is the manager of PT Freeport Indonesia's Partnership Fund for indigenous Papuans from the Amungme and Kamoro tribes and other indigenous Papuan communities. The foundation was established to support the government in creating a healthy, educated community that can compete in the modern economic system while preserving natural resources, culture, and heritage of indigenous Papuans according to local wisdom. In addition to the aforementioned scholarships, YPMAK's educational activities also include managing six dormitories for Papuan children with a total of 1,695 students in 2024.
Met after the graduation ceremony, Sephia admitted that she had strong motivation to become a doctor since childhood. Her desire to serve the community in her hometown of Aroanop drove her to maximize the PTFI scholarship through YPMAK to the best of her ability.
"Since childhood, I have firmly held onto the belief that I must become a doctor in the future. I am grateful to PT Freeport Indonesia, YPMAK, and Binterbusih Foundation for this scholarship support. My childhood dream of becoming a doctor has come true," said Sephia.
She also advised fellow scholarship recipients to stay motivated and make the best use of the PTFI scholarship opportunity to complete their education and return to develop Mimika.
