Sri Mulyani’s Moments Meeting Female Workers At the Freeport Mine

04 December 2022

Who says that women can’t do a man’s job? Including a man’s job in the mining sector. Thus, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani shared a few stories regarding outstanding Indonesian women who are working at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). “Like the mighty Bird of Paradise of @freeportindonesia. They work in the mining world which is synonymous with 3M (Man, Money and Machine),” wrote Sri Mulyani in her Instagram account, Sunday (12/4).

Among these mighty women are Lucia, Muhtawagai and Melania from Learning and Organizational Development. Then there is Emilia, Paulina and Nurlaila who handle the Environment. Or, Mailani, Natalia and Agatha who handle more technical work, as well as a host of others. The work of these mighty/tough women is amazing. Like Lita Karubaba, who has worked for 25 years, or Anike Marandof, 29 years. Anike is from Security Risk Management, or Meilani from General Construction & Special Projects, working in areas where generally male workers do. They are also breaking various stigma regarding the role of women in extreme working environments,” she iterated.

According to Sri Mulyani, the figure of a woman is now very much different compared to previously. There are no gender restrictions at work. “We are all able to contribute to the best of our ability towards state and nation, without having to abandon the principal role as a woman,” she stated.

Sri Mulyani also recounted the moments when she met with the Freeport Indonesia workers. She shared her experiences as a woman who was committed to having a family, and at the same time had to finish her S3 education. “It wasn’t easy. However, there is no gender limit in working. We can all contribute to the best of our ability to the country and society, without abandoning our principal role as women,” she mentioned.

“Speaking for myself, in addition to serving as the Minister of Finance, I am also a wife, mother and grandparent to 4 beloved grandchildren. These host of responsibilities should not be added with burdens to our mind which are of our own creation. We should continue to nurture our passion and need-to-know, just as we care for those beloved ones in our lives,” she continued.

She also stated her appreciation to those mining companies supporting gender mainstreaming by extending men and women equal opportunities in terms of careers, development and families. “I hope, ahead, the number of female employees will continue to increase,” she concluded.
