Support the G20 Agenda, Freeport Has an Underground Mine Electric Train

15 July 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has consistently backed the G20 2022 agenda's focus on Reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. This was conveyed in the Twenty Talks dialogue titled "The Mission of Sustainability through Reducing Emissions," which took place on Thursday (7/7) in Jakarta, coinciding with the momentum of the Indonesian presidency in the series of events of the 2022 G20 meeting.

Together with Kompas, the G20 Climate Stewardship Working Group (CSWG), the Kehati Foundation, Papua University, and environmentalists, PT Freeport Indonesia agreed that multi-stakeholder collaboration is required to accelerate GHG emission reduction mitigation efforts at the national and global levels.

Through the company's mining operations and multi-stakeholder partnerships that have been established, PTFI contributes to efforts to reduce GHG emissions. "PTFI believes that the private sector plays an important role in encouraging the implementation of the GHG emission reduction program. As part of the company's commitment to sustainability, PTFI has a climate strategy to support a green economy and provide shared added value to stakeholders as part of the company's commitment to sustainability. We also fully support the government's goal of achieving zero emissions by 2060 during the G20 presidency in 2022, and we hope that this momentum can become a forum for transformation to create a world free of GHG emissions " said PTFI President Director Tony Wenas, Friday (15/7/2022).

PTFI previously committed to reducing GHG emissions by 30% by 2030 at the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP) in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. This dedication is then demonstrated by the company's efforts to provide copper supplies to support the use of environmentally friendly technologies in a variety of industries.

The use of renewable energy which is now being actively promoted by various industry players will require more copper, so PT Freeport Indonesia will balance the increase in copper production in line with the company's support for a green economy. However, PTFI emphasized that the company's sustainability efforts must be supported by multi-stakeholder partnerships and synergies to achieve optimal sustainability targets.

The speakers at the Twenty Talks dialogue also agreed that multi-stakeholder collaboration is one solution to the problem of rising GHG emissions. "Collaboration among the government, business, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are critical to averting the climate crisis and meeting the national target of reducing GHG emissions by 29 percent by 2030. The efforts that PTFI has made thus far should serve as a model for other stakeholders interested in balancing business activities and environmental impacts, as well as moving and playing a role in achieving sustainability targets," said Laksmi Dewanthi, Chair of the CSWG G20.

Furthermore, PTFI's sustainability efforts to encourage GHG emission reductions include transformations in various lines of business. "Since 2019, PTFI has used underground mining and low-emission electric trains to transport ore from mines. PTFI has also received permission to construct an Oil and Gas Power Plant (PLTMG) that can run on biodiesel and replace fossil fuels. coal-fired power plants into liquefied natural gas (LNG), making them more efficient and energy efficient. If these efforts are sustained and other stakeholders join in, PTFI is expected to exceed its GHG emission reduction target of up to 50% by 2030 " explained Vice PTFI Environmental President Gesang Setyadi.

Within the scope of the program, PT Freeport Indonesia has implemented a 3,000-hectare reforestation program, planting 5 million trees that contribute to carbon sequestration. Furthermore, PTFI intends to carry out reforestation and tree planting on an area of 3,810 hectares in Jayapura this year. This accomplishment will be followed by the publication of operational plans and mitigation actions related to forestry and land use.

"The community's and various stakeholders' demands for renewable energy and efforts to reduce GHG emissions increasingly encourage companies like PTFI to innovate and transform. We will always be open to forming strategic alliances and exploring other initiatives that can provide added value to various stakeholders" Tony concluded.
