Supports National Children’s Day 2024 Peak Event, Freeport Committed to Character Building for the Nation’s Children

Jayapura, 24 Juli 2024 - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) supported the 40th National Children’s Day (HAN) commemoration event, which climaxed with an event held at the Istora Papua Bangkit stadium in Jayapura, Papua Province. HAN 2024 provided momentum for the company to strengthen its commitment to advancing the nation’s children towards realizing a Healthy Papua and Smart Papua. Republic of Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo personally launched the event.

This offers an important moment for all entities, including PTFI to strengthen their commitment to supporting children in Papua and Indonesia. We are ensuring our children are protected and are supported in the areas of education, health, sports, and other activities,” PTFI Director & EVP for Sustainable Development and Community Relations Claus Wamafma stated.

In the area of education, Freeport has awarded more than 12,000 scholarships. It also established and is operating six boarding schools, in addition to building educational infrastructure and operating educational facilities.

PTFI and its partners are likewise actively boosting the quality of children’s health by helping to create clean and healthy environments. “PTFI built the Rumah Sakit Mitra Masyarakat (RSMM) hospital and 6 clinics in the vicinity of the company’s operating area, towards increasing and providing ease of access to healthcare services for local residents. The hospital offers free healthcare services for 7-tribe communities residing near the company’s area,” Claus said.

In the area of health, PTFI conducts a Nutritious Food Supplement Recovery (PMT-P) program for infants and children under five years of age who have been identified as suffering or potentially suffering from malnutrition. The program offers comprehensive healthcare services for infants and children under five years of age and includes provision of nutritious food supplements as well as regular monitoring of children’s growth. Pregnant women are also instructed on nutrition, with follow-up activities to make house calls for checking up on the health of infants and children under five years of age.

In the area of sports, Claus continued, PTFI established Papua Football Academy (PFA). Through PFA it is hoped young generations of Papuans will become professional prime football players and productive human resources in Papua for Indonesia. “PFA is a vehicle for Papuan youths to learn football and acquire formal schooling, towards their becoming competitive and creative individuals,” Claus said.

Claus went on to convey PFA had only recently concluded a talent search among youths in Papua. This was aimed at filling the quota of admitting 30 youths born in the year 2011 into the academy as the third batch of students. Also, together with AllIndonesia Football Union PSSI, PTFI organized and held the Freeport Grassroots Tournament (FGT), which first events were held in Papua and Gresik, East Java.

“Participating in various tournaments is crucial towards building the children’s character and mentality, and psychology. The children will also learn the meaning of sportsmanship, fair play, and mutual respect, as the most important part of their character development,” Claus said.

The climax of the 40th National Children’s Day commemoration taking place in Jayapura was themed “Children Protected, Indonesia Advances.” This event was organized by the Action for Solidarity in the Era of the Onward Indonesia Cabinet (OASE KIM). Thousands of children participated in this momentous event and enlivened by various games as well as MURI record was broken with Elementary School and Junior High School students performing a Yospan colossal mass dance.
