The Five Commitment of PR Freeport Indonesia in its efforts to Preserve the Environment in Papua

23 November 2021

Basically, if managed well, a mine can produce an amazing variety of benefits for life. Mankind, for one, would be able to count on it for quality of life as well as prosperity.

It has now been over 50 years that Freeport Indonesia has been present among us but nothing if anything has been really effectively pursued to prevent the impacts of its mining activities on Papua’s   natural landscape

Throughout its history PT Freeport Indonesia has not only been managing its mining exploitations to its own advantage but has also been making efforts to assure that  its existence would not be detrimental to the general environment especially the environment surrounding its operational area.

As per company policy, PT Freeport Indonesia has made a commitment to minimize the impact of its exploitation activities to preserve the natural environment of Papua in general. Hereunder are the efforts Freeport Indonesia has pursued in making its commitments possible.

1. Monitoring and examining the working area.

As a form of compliance with AMDAL. 300L of 1997, PT Freeport Indonesia has been running a protective and environmental monitoring program for the entire working areas, starting in the lowlands all the way to the highlands, to measure in a routine fashion, namely once every six months,  the characteristics of water, sediments and its hydrology. It did not stop here but extended the examinations to include the sensitive points in the estuary of the Ajkwa River, considering this a site where tailing is flowing through and deposited in

2  Tailing Waste Management

PT Freeport Indonesia has given special attention to the watershed of the Ajkwa River which is a tailing deposition as well as a controlling area. Tailing is the waste left by Freeport’s mining activities which is voluminous and of enormous proportions/ Since 2013 Freeport Indonesia has continuously been pursuing to reclaim the estuary of the Ajkwa River by way of planting mangrove. Studies have indicated that new land mass was formed by the sedimentation which is the product of reclamation activities.  The mangrove forest ecosystem in the Ajkwa estuary has become a habitat for many species of marine animals like crabs, fish, snails, shrimps et.al. Crabs, fish, snails, shrimps and sea worms are often found her.

3. Conservation of Biodiversityi

Since 1994, PT Freeport Indonesia has been actively studying the environment of its work site. One of the points of its Environmental Policy is the contribution through Biodiversity.   Through this program were detected a range of biological species in Papua. The Indonesian Institute of Science with the South Australian Museum in corroboration with PT Freeport Indonesia succeeded to discover the latest species, i.e a frog species called Litoria Lubisi in Mimika, Papua.

4. The concern for endemic flora and fauna

The Company has also involved itself in conservation activities of endemic flora and fauna of Papua since 2006. In an effort to preserve the biodiversity of Papua, PT Freeport has routinely been releasing protected animals to the wild. In this regard the company is working in collaboration with other parties such as the local government, non-government organizations (NGO), the military and the community. For its commitment and contributions to this cause PT Freeport Indonesia has been awarded many laudations and appreciations.

5. Support for Environmental Education

In an effort to help the community to become environmentally aware, PT Freeport Indonesia has actively reached to various parties through the environmental education program by commemorating special events like Earth Day, World Environment Day, Clean City Day, Targets of these commemorations is a widespread audience consisting of workers, stakeholders, local citizens, government officials, the media and security units. Being a company engaged in mining, PT Freeport is trying to execute good mining practices with responsibility.

Environmental education is applied to schools located in the nearby area of PT Freeport Indonesia. The company helps with formulating and developing the curriculum. Efforts to minimize environmental impact are pursued by PT Freeport Indonesia. By supporting such diverse environmental program the company will always take these in consideration when making decisions. Apart from that these policies will be very beneficial to preserve the environment to make progress in research.
