To Begin the Series of Celebrations for Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, Freeport Indonesia Holds a Prayer of Gratitude from Papua to Gresik

03 August 2025

Timika, August 3, 2025 – To kick off the integrated series of celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s Independence, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) held simultaneous Worship and Prayers of Gratitude across four of its operational areas: Central Papua Province (Tembagapura District, Kuala Kencana City, and Nabire Regency), and Gresik Regency in East Java Province.

“This joint prayer reflects our gratitude for Indonesia’s 80 years of independence and serves as a moment to strengthen the spirituality and nationalism of all PTFI employees. It also symbolizes the unity of the company from Central Papua to Gresik,” said Tony Wenas, President Director of PTFI.

The event, held on Thursday, July 31, and Friday, August 1, 2025, was attended by over 2,000 employees, serving as the opening for PTFI's independence celebration series, which this year takes place simultaneously throughout August in an integrated manner from upstream to downstream.

“On this occasion of Indonesia’s Independence Day, I encourage all PTFI employees to continue contributing positively and delivering their best performance for themselves and the nation, as a concrete form of support for national industrial progress,” he added.

Worship and prayer activities in the highlands of Tembagapura were held at two locations: Sion Church led by Pastor Yandi Manobe, and Darussa’adah Mosque led by Ustadz Rukmana Al Garuty. In Kuala Kencana, the prayer was held at the Multi-purpose Building, also led by Pastor Yandi Manobe. In Gresik, the prayer at the PTFI Smelter was led by the Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of Gresik Regency, KH. Ainur Rofiq Toyyib, at Babussalam Mosque. In Nabire, the thanksgiving worship was held at GKI Tabernakel Oyehe, led by Pastor Swesty Amanupunnjo.

In Tembagapura, Ustadz Rukmana Al Garuty encouraged PTFI employees to be grateful for Indonesia’s independence by responsibly managing the country’s natural resources. Pastor Yandi Manobe, in his sermon, conveyed that faith can positively impact the nation, “Obedience to God shapes a life that is useful—not only for oneself but also for others. From a life rooted in faith comes a tangible impact that builds, strengthens, and brings light to the nation,” he said.

At PTFI’s Gresik Smelter, KH. Ainur Rofiq Toyyib, Chairman of the Gresik MUI, stated that 80 years of Indonesia’s independence is a great blessing from Allah. He invited all smelter employees to pray to continue working for Indonesia’s progress. Meanwhile, Rev. Swesty Amanupunnjo at GKI Tabernakel Oyehe, Nabire, Central Papua, emphasized in her sermon that faith is not only about belief but also about action.

“When we work and live with integrity, we not only build ourselves but also create a tangible impact for the nation,” said Rev. Swesty.

As the world’s largest integrated copper mining company from upstream to downstream, PTFI is also celebrating the 80th Indonesian Independence Day. Throughout August, PTFI is organizing various activities to foster nationalism and mutual cooperation in five operational locations, from upstream in Papua—covering Tembagapura, Kuala Kencana, and Nabire—to downstream in Gresik, East Java, and Jakarta.

In Tembagapura, various competitions and cultural performances are held together with residents of Banti Village. In the Lowlands, Social Service and Village Cleaning activities take place in Ayuka and Tipuka, as well as competitions for children and adults. In Nabire, Free Cataract Surgery is held combined with Education and Free Eye Examinations for 1,000 school children. In Gresik, blood donation, digital training for Gresik MSMEs, and the Copper Melody of the Archipelago Concert take place. The culmination is the simultaneous 80th Independence Day Commemoration Ceremony attended by all employees and contractors at five PTFI work location points.

The entire series of activities is carried out with full spirit of mutual cooperation and togetherness with residents around the operational areas. Together with the nation's best sons and daughters, PTFI continues to contribute to the country, running safe and sustainable operations as a form of gratitude for Indonesia's 80 years of independence.
