Jayapura, April 6, 2026 – The Rector of Cenderawasih University, Prof. Dr. Oscar Oswald O. Wambrauw, SE, M.Sc., agr., and PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Tony Wenas signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) to build an inclusive and sustainable education ecosystem in Papua. The signing took place alongside a Guest Lecture by the PTFI President Director at the UNCEN Science and Partnership Building in Jayapura, on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
"The signing of this cooperation agreement is an important step in strengthening the strategic partnership between Cenderawasih University and PT Freeport Indonesia. This is a continuation of a long collaborative journey that has been well-established, including the historic milestone of the handover of the UNCEN Science and Partnership Building in December 2025," said the UNCEN Rector in his remarks at the Tembagapura Auditorium, UNCEN Science and Partnership Building.
The Rector stated that collaboration between universities and industry is key to producing superior, adaptive human resources ready to face future challenges. Therefore, this synergy between UNCEN and PT Freeport Indonesia is not merely an institutional agreement, but a genuine commitment to building Papua's future through education.
PTFI President Director Tony Wenas, in his remarks, said that cooperation between the company and universities or educational institutions is essential to bridge supply and demand requirements. "Freeport needs capable human resources to run its mining operations; UNCEN will prepare graduates according to those needs without sacrificing the existing curriculum or national standards," said Tony, who has visited the UNCEN campus five times.
He noted that Freeport Indonesia and UNCEN share a very close history. Many collaborations have been carried out, ranging from research on the Singing Dog in Grasberg, socioanthropological research, research on the customary land rights of the Amungme tribe, to cooperation in the form of teaching.
"With great pride and pleasure, today we are signing, first, the PTFI–UNCEN MoU, which will serve as an umbrella for our various collaborations in the areas of education development, research and innovation, human resource capacity building, and other collaborative programs," said Tony.
Second, an MoU among PTFI, UNCEN, and Arizona State University to improve education quality toward higher accreditation. And third, the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) between PTFI and UNCEN for the Practitioner Teaching Program, covering activities such as thematic learning, seminars, training, and character education.
The guest lecture by the PTFI President Director was enthusiastically received by students from various study programs gathered at the Tembagapura Auditorium, UNCEN Science and Partnership Building. Students received a comprehensive presentation on PTFI's history and mining operations from upstream to downstream, insights into the industry's need for top-tier human resources, career opportunities for Papuan workers, and PTFI's contributions to Papua's and Indonesia's development through various social investment programs. The session also served as an active forum for interaction between students and the PTFI President Director as they explored practical insights from the industrial world.
It is worth noting that 332 UNCEN alumni currently work as professional employees at PTFI. The number of UNCEN scholarship recipients from Freeport stands at 255, with 51 currently active students — a number that is expected to grow going forward. This reflects the tangible impact of industry-academia synergy in building a sustainable education ecosystem.“
