Mimika, January 16, 2025 - The Vice Chair of Commission VII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo, visited PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) operations area in Mimika Regency, Central Papua, January 14-15.
Rahayu, along with Commission VI DPR member Kawendra Lukistian and Commission XII DPR member Rocky Chandra, inspected the Tembagapura Highland operations area, including the Grasberg open-pit mining area, remote underground mining equipment control room, ore crushing area, and the loading and unloading station at the Grasberg Block Cave underground mine, located 1,000 meters below ground level.
Rahayu appreciated PTFI's performance and the company's commitment to developing Human Resources, particularly Papuan employees, into qualified workers. In her view, PTFI's presence among the Papuan community since the beginning of its operations has provided great benefits in developing Papuan civilization to become healthier, more prosperous, and independent through a series of corporate social investment programs.
"After seeing and hearing directly how PTFI operates with its mining operation complexity, I am very proud to witness our nation's children, especially native Papuan workers and female workers, involved in mining industry operations," said Rahayu.
PTFI President Director Tony Wenas stated that during PTFI's 57 years of operations in Papua, PTFI has been part of Papua and will continue to grow and develop together with the Papuan community.
"Freeport Indonesia is part of Papua, just as the Papuan community is part of Freeport Indonesia. Our commitment is very strong in promoting Papuan community welfare. This can be seen from PTFI's workforce composition, where 40 percent are native Papuan employees," said Tony.
The following day, Rahayu and her delegation had the opportunity to visit the Lowland area in Timika, including; PTFI's Reclamation and Biodiversity Center, Taruna Papua Boarding School (SATP), Mimika Sport Complex (MSC), and Mitra Masyarakat Hospital (RSMM).
At PTFI's Reclamation and Biodiversity Center, Rahayu and her delegation directly observed some tailing deposit areas (sand residue from ore processing) that have been transformed into seasonal crop farming areas, horticulture, plantation crops, cattle farming, forestry, and freshwater fish cultivation.
"Freeport Indonesia demonstrates its commitment to the environment by managing tailings that are turned into productive land through various reclamation programs," explained Rahayu.
The journey then continued to one of PTFI's social investments in education. Rahayu had the opportunity to see SATP up close, and she expressed her admiration for the facilities and children's learning process.
"The boarding school facilities for primary and secondary education built and managed by Freeport are extraordinary, providing quality education to Amungme, Kamoro, and 5 related tribes' children, as well as other Papuan communities," she said.
In addition to education, Tony also explained that PTFI's social investment also includes community empowerment in socio-cultural, sports, infrastructure, health, and economic fields.
"Commitment to the surrounding community is certainly demonstrated through various massive corporate social responsibility programs. About Rp1.5 trillion per year for health, education, economy, infrastructure programs, and so on, will continue until the end of mining operations," said Tony.
