Vice President: DOB to Improve Services for the People of Papua

12 July 2023

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin stated the establishment of New Autonomous Regions (DOB) aims to bring services closer to the welfare of the people in Papua. "We hope that these new provinces can make basic services more accessible to the people of Papua," he said in Timika, Mimika Regency, Papua Province, on Wednesday. He emphasized that the government is giving serious attention by introducing DOB in Papua with the hope of improving services accessibility to the community.

According to the Vice President, he highly appreciates the contribution of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in human development in Papua through the Nemangkawi Mining Institute (IPN). "I see the presence of IPN as a manifestation of our commitment to invest in skilled and professional local workers, especially the indigenous Papuans," he stated.

After observing the activities at IPN, the Vice President is confident that indigenous Papuan workers possess a variety of skills and reliable knowledge to support the company's performance. "There are 4,000,000 potential workers educated through IPN, with 3,000,000 employed by PTFI, while the rest are dispersed working throughout Indonesia," he said.

The Vice President also expressed high appreciation for the Mimika Regency Government's attention to indigenous Papuan workers through the Employment Social Security Program (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan). "The presence of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan provides social security protection for workers in Indonesia, including in Papua," added Ma'ruf Amin.
