Vice President Visits Collaborative Social Service of PPAD, Regional Government and PT Freeport Indonesia

12 July 2023

Vice President (Wapres) of the Republic of Indonesia, KH Ma'ruf Amin visits social services (Bansos) at the Mimika Regional General Hospital, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. The social service activity was held in collaboration with the Association of Indonesian Army Retired Officers (PPAD), the Government of Central Papua Province, Mimika Regency, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), and the Association of Indonesian Ophthalmologists (Perdami).

The social service themed 'Kitorang Melihat Terang' ('We See Clearly') focuses on cataract and cleft lip surgery, general health, teeth, and the distribution of vitamins and groceries. The cataract surgery was carried out by a team of doctors from Perdami with a total of 78 cataract patients, or 105 pupils, and the cleft lip surgery by a team of RSPAD (Rumah Sakit Pusat Angkatan Darat) doctors with a total of 12 patients.

PPAD Chairman Lieutenant General Dr (H.C.) Doni Monardo (retd) said that this social service departs from the condition of the Papuan people, among whom there are many people who suffer from cataracts. "Allegedly because the kitchen smoke inside the honai, the traditional house of the Papuan people, has no windows and only has one door, causing irritation and leading to cataracts. Starting from just one point to filling the entire lens of the eye and causing loss of sight," said Doni.

On the other hand, some of the assistance provided in this social service activity included support of five billion rupiah by PTFI, which was provided in the form of providing 1,150 basic food packages, as well as transportation and accommodation for doctors from RSPAD, Perdami, and PPAD as executors of social services in Timika. Part of a total of 6,000 basic food packages and other assistance will be provided in joint activities with the Regional Government to support health management such as stunting in Mimika and Nabire Regencies.

On the same occasion, President Director of PTFI Tony Wenas, conveyed the strong commitment of the company he leads to continue to provide support to the people of Mimika Regency in dealing with health problems. "The program currently being run by PTFI is part of the company's efforts to support the health of the Mimika Regency community. We plan to realize this commitment in stages until the end of 2023, collaborating with various parties," said Tony.

He also hopes the Regional Government and PTFI can support public health, especially children, so in the future they can become healthy children of the nation. "We always believe that the Regional Government and PTFI have always helped in matters of health through the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK) and other traditional institutions, this is very extraordinary," he added.

Apart from this social service program, PTFI in conjunction with YPMAK continue to support community healthcare service activities through development and operation of hospitals and clinics in Mimika Regency, including the hospital Rumah Sakit Mitra Masyarakat (RSMM) in Mimika, the clinics in SP-9, SP-12 and Pomako, respectively, and the TB – STI (Sexual Transmission Infection) clinic. PTFI is also the major driver of the malaria control program conducted in partnership with the Mimika Regency Health Office.
