Welcoming Christmas, Papua Football Academy Organizes Social Events to Share Happiness

07 December 2022

Participating in welcoming and celebrating Christmas, the Papua Football Academy (PFA) organized a number of social events involving players, coaches, and officials.

Papua Football Academy is one of PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) social investment programs. The Papua Football Academy is one of the first football academies in Indonesia implementing FIFA Children Safeguarding and developing it into Papua Football Academy Children Safeguarding by adding a local wisdom factor.  Inaugurated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in Jayapura on August 31, 2022, all the activities of the Papua Football Academy are cantered at the Mimika Sport Complex.

During its first year, management of the Papua Football Academy was attended by 30 Papuan children born in the year 2009. They were the result of talent scouting taking place in 3 regions, namely Timika, Merauke, and Jayapura in June of 2022. Under the tagline ‘Dari Tanah Papua untuk Indonesia’, or ‘From the Land of Papua for Indonesia’, the presence of the Papua Football Academy is not just expected to contribute to the development of national football, but also play a role in terms of character building of the Papuan children/youngsters.

Welcoming the Christmas celebrations, the Papua Football Academy proceeded to organize social events for the surrounding community. In addition to internal events, Management of the Papua Football Academy also organized a Papua Football Academy Christmas Charity event, an actual/real contribution of the Papua Football Academy to the community.

Under the theme ‘Sharing the Love of the PFA Family’, or ‘Berbagi Kasih Keluarga PFA’, said activity is expected to further foster the spirit and social concern of the children of the Papua Football Academy. The event also aims to strengthen the brotherhood/kinship between people, regardless of ethnicity, religion, and race. “We would like the Papua Football Academy children to share happiness with their friends, particularly those in dire need of attention,” stated Wolfgang Pikal, Director of the Papua Football Academy. “In addition to regularly practicing football, they can also serve as the spreader of joy to the surrounding community. Concern and empathy for others needs to be cultivated from an early age.”

According to Wolfgang, this Christmas activity also aims to teach the Papua Football Academy children not to forget to always be appreciative and grateful for all the Lord’s blessings and love. The event simultaneously serves to close the series of activities of the Papua Football Academy 2022 program. All the Papua Football Academy students along with all their families will again gather to celebrate Christmas and New Year.

The Christmas Charity event, ‘Berbagi Kasih Keluarga PFA’ was held on Wednesday (12/7) in three parts. They paid a visit to the Santa Susana Orphanage, Timika (PTA A), thereafter went to the Mitra Masyarakat Hospital Timika children’s ward (PTA B), and ended up practicing football with the children living in the vicinity of the Mimika Sport Complex.
