19 November 2020

To assist efforts in facilitating the communities in Otakwa and Manasari Villages meeting their economic needs, as well as commodities, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) collaborating with Koperasi Maria Bintang Laut (Cooperative), officially opened the wholesale centers and stalls in Otakwa and Manasari Villages located in the Mimika Timur Jauh or Far East Mimika District, Friday (11/13), recently.

Through an economic development program in partnership with the Mimika Regency Administration (Pemkab) and the Timika Diocese, the aim of opening of the wholesale centers and stalls is accommodating the needs of the communities residing in the Far East Mimika area who are mostly ethnic Kamoros, as well as, being the realization of PTFI’s economic development program in terms of efforts to develop community economy.

“Naturally, we, representing the corporation hope that this endeavour is going to run well, the community’s need for basic commodities is fulfilled, several other needs such as fuel/gas for the boats is also available here, because besides at the stalls there is also the ‘Pom Mimi’ or mini gas station, to provide the fuel/gas needed by the community,” thus explained PT Freeport Indonesia Superintendent Community Economic Development, representing the PT Freeport Indonesia Management, Soni Zonggonao, to attend the wholesale centers’ inauguration events in Manasari and Otakwa.

The wholesale centers and stalls were deliberately established in the Far East Mimika area to facilitate the communities residing along the coastal area to meet their economic needs without them having to travel far to Timika City, which takes a lot of time and is cost a lot of money, as well as avoiding risks along the journey.

Developing the wholesale centers and stalls in these villages is also a part of PTFI’s commitment in terms of supporting the government’s program to establish Otakwa as an economic center in the eastern region, benefitting the communities in the Agamuga District, Jila District, as well as, communities in the villages surrounding the Far East Mimika District.

The wholesale center and stalls sell the basic commodities, fishery supplies such as nets, cooler boxes, outboard engines, boats using outboard engines or ‘ketinting’, building materials, spiritual needs, ice cubes, school supplies, clothing, and fuel/gas.

Mimika Far East District Chief, Yulius Katagama, said establishing the wholesale centers and stalls is in line with the government’s plan, namely economic equality and fortifying village economy.

“Therefore, the regional administration fully supports the establishment of these village stalls. Courtesy of assistance from Freeport, collaborating with the Catholic Church of the Timika Diocese in this program, I am confident that the future will be better. My community in this village is able to meet their daily needs at the same price as anywhere else (in the City); everything they may need is available here,” concluded Yulius.

The Head of Koperasi Maria Bintang Laut (KMBL) Cooperative, Benyamin (Beny) Meo said,” We at KMBL as an extension of the Catholic Church’s Timika Diocese call on the entire community to together care for their village. Ahead, there will be no need to sell their catches to traders far away in the city, we at the kiosks are prepared to buy their catches at the same price offered in other places. The community can bring their catches of fish and karaka (crabs) to us, we will welcome them,” Beny Meo said.

The opening inauguration of the wholesale kiosks opened with a ceremonial blessing recited by Pastor Stefanus Sabinus from Mapurujaya Parish, followed with ribbon-cutting performed jointly by Mimika Timur Jauh District Chief Yulius Katagame, Valentinus Mitowo, and local attendees.
