With Freeport Support, Mimika Government to Plant 1000Trees

The Mimika Regional Government with support of PT Freeport Indonesia commemorated World Environment Day on Saturday June 5th, 2021 on the square of the former Timika market on Saturday June 5th, 2021. The commemoration ceremony was marked by the planting of 1000 trees.

World Environment Day will be commemorated throughout the month of June with diverse activities such as planting trees and regular city cleaning activities. A range of competitions like photo and video contests all with the ecosystem as its main theme will be held in the PTFI area including environmental scrutiny competitions for employees, decorating 3R garbage bins, and organizing environmental webinars.

An activity with the theme “Restoring the Ecosystem” was held by the PTFI Environmental Department in association with the Mimika Regency’s Environmental Office (DHL). All those activities are aimed to increase awareness and concern for the environment. In line with PT Freeport Indonesia’s commitment to consistently manage the environment through its environmental management system it is hoped to succeed in consistently provide positive contributions to the environment

In his opening address for the event, Senior Manager Environmental Affairs PTFI, Gesang Setyadi, said the tree planting activity constitutes a combined effort from PTFI and the Mimika Regional Government to contribute towards the cleanliness of Mimika to welcome the 20th National Sportsweek PON and Pesparawi Nasional (National Church Choir Festival)

Gesang explained that World Environment Day constitutes a very important vehicle the United Nations uses to raise environmental awareness on a global scale and to encourage political attention and action globally. “World Environment Day Is seen as an opportunity for all world citizens to be partopf a global action to voice protection of our planet, to utilize sustainable natural resources and to live environmentally friendly life styles,” he said.

He continued to say the UN has declared the period 2021-2030 as the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration with the intention to restore the degradation to the ecosystem to combat the climate crisis, to prevent the extinction of one million species and to improve food sustainability, water supply and livelihoods.

“Commemorating Word Environment Day is an instrument for the community to protect and preserve the environment. In the framework of commemorating this day PTFI has intentionally organized a wide range of activities to which the public including the PTFI community are invited to take part in the combined effort to actively preserve the ecosystem of Mimika in accordance with the company’s commitment to conserve and protect the environment through sustainable programs,” he said

Meanwhile, Mimika Deputy Regent, Johannes Rettob, representing the Mimika Regional Government said in his address that the importance to commemorate World Environment Day is to strengthen our awareness to preserve the environment to the best of our ability. He impressed upon the community not to litter indiscriminately and uphold environmental cleanliness at all times. “A healthy and clean environment requires collaboration with stakeholders and requires public awareness.” Rettob said.
