PT Smelting, built in 1996 together with a Japanese Consortium and operated by Mitsubishi, is PTFI’s first smelter that was built as part of PTFI’s compliance to the Contract of Work II. Located in Gresik, East Java, PT Smelting is the first copper smelter facility in Indonesia.

PT Smelting is able to refine and process 1 million tons of copper concentrate to 300.000 tons of copper cathodes annually to meet  domestic and overseas production needs. With this processing capacity, PTFI has been able to process and refine 40% of the total copper concentrate produced in Papua.
