10 July 2023

Two students of the Taruna Papua Boarding School (SATP), partners of the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK) which manage the partnership fund of PT Freeport Indonesia Mimika, won a bronze medal in the kungfu sport at the VII National Sports Society Recreation Festival (FORNAS) in Bandung, West Java on 3-8 July 2023.

The arrival of the two SATP students was directly welcomed by the Head of SATP together with the teachers at UPBU Mozes Kilangin Airport, Timika, Monday (10/6/2023). "Actually, there were 3 students who participated in FORNAS in the kungfu branch from SATP. However, 2 students won the bronze medal," said the Official Kungfu Team who is also the Deputy Head of Student Affairs for SATP, Angga Rumende.

He said, two students won bronze medals, namely Semin Sem in the empty-handed class and Soni Diwitau in the Golok creation weapon class. While another one, namely Melki Omabak participated in 2 classes, namely empty hands and open creation. The bronze medals won by two SATP children is a new history for native Papuan children, who have won bronze for the first time.

Moreover, kung fu in FORNAS is participated by 17 provinces and 400 kung fu activists. So, the competition is quite tough because many are already at the professional level. And Papua, which is participating for the first time, can win a medal. This is an extraordinary achievement. "Kungfu sport has been implemented in SATP for 2 years and has become an extracurricular activity. This sport aims to develop children's self-confidence and courage," he said.

Angga said the obstacles he faced when competing, especially in terms of equipment, were still standard. Then, in the technical meeting, the requirements have been fulfilled. "However, there were comments in the jury that we were short on time. "Overall, we were not lacking, but the decision from the jury was well received," he said.

The head of SATP, Johana M.M Tnunay said that she was happy that they had succeeded because they already carried the name of Central Papua province, especially Mimika Regency. Moreover, they are native Papuan children and SATP always support children in positive things, both sports, arts and academics. "We are very proud of them, because this is the first time for us. In the future it can be even better and get the attention of the local government," she said.

Meanwhile, Soni Diwitau, who won a bronze medal, said that he was very happy to take part in FORNAS. Especially in that event, he becomes representative of Papuan, the Amungme Tribe won a bronze medal. "I am very happy to get a bronze medal. The future will be even better," he said.
