30 Papua Football Academy Students Try to Training in Tembagapura

12 October 2022

Papua Football Academy players had the opportunity to experience the unique training atmosphere in the PT. Freeport Indonesia in Tembagapura, with an altitude of about 2,000 meters above sea level. Papua Football Academy (PFA) was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on August 31, 2022, and is located at Mimika Sports Complex, Timika.

The academy, which combines soccer training and formal education, aims to develop the soccer talent of Papuan children with a full scholarship for two years.  A total of 30 PFA students now have the opportunity to get acquainted with the senior management of PT. Freeport Indonesia and its employees and communities in Tembagapura on Thursday (6/10/2022).  "It's such a valuable opportunity for the students to train in Tembagapura, at a very different altitude from where they usually train," said Wolfgang Pikal, the Director of the Papua Football Academy.

PFA training sessions were held for two days on Friday (7/10/2022) and Saturday (8/10/2022), continuing the curriculum program implemented at the Mimika Sport Complex. The students were practising to build cohesiveness in playing soccer and "sports for development" materials adopted from the German Football Federation's coaching curriculum. "In the first training session, we practised attacking in a third of the opponent's area. In the second session, we had a number of guest participants to attend the coaching clinic." Wolfgang said. "They follow the training program that we have arranged, such as improving the quality of passing the ball," added the former coach assistant of the Indonesian national team.

In the second training session, six students of the Jayawijaya Education Foundation (YPJ) in Tembagapura had the opportunity to get the coaching knowledge of the Papua Football Academy. Papua Football Academy players gladly welcomed the opportunity to practice at the PT. Freeport Indonesia.n"The training is fun, although we are tired, but it doesn't seem like we are sweating," said Chorino Jimmy, a PFA player from Jayapura. "It's fun, like practicing in an air-conditioned field," said Musa Madai, a student from Merauke.

The fog that covered the soccer field on the second day boosted the excitement of the PFA team. "It's like we are training in Europe," said assistant coach Kelly Pepuho, who visited Tembagapura for the first time.

Furthermore, the Senior Management of PT. Freeport Indonesia also welcomes PFA students to practice at their stadium. "I am impressed by the PFA students' behaviour. It is proof that they are not only taught to play football well but also educate students to become individuals with good character," said George Banini, Executive Vice President of Operations of PT Freeport Indonesia.

"I believe this program is not in vain. Papuan children will get valuable lessons and experiences while learning at the Papua Football Academy," said Brian Esser, Executive Vice President of Side Administration of PT Freeport Indonesia.
