66,666 Seedlings to be Planted, Maintaining Cycloop Mountain Range

The Administration of the Province of Papua, alongside the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, will be planting 66,666 bamboo seedlings in the buffer area of the Cycloop Mountain Range Nature Reserve (Cagar Alam) along 60 km from Pasir 6 Jayapura City, to Maribu Village, Jayapura Regency.

The planting of the bamboo seedlings with the tagline ‘Kita Jaga Cycloop, Cycloop Jaga Kita’, or ‘We Protect Cycloop, Cycloop Protects Us’, still is one of a series of activities in the Papua Provincial Administration’s agenda to commemorate the 78th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia Independence year 2023. This activity is supported by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and the Governor of Irian Jaya, 1988 to 1993, Barnabas Suebu.

Head of the Papua Communication and Information Office (Komunikasi dan Informatika/Kominfo), Jeri A Yudianto, stated the planting is scheduled to involve adat community elements and recruitment of the Cycloop Mountain Range Task Force (Satgas Cagar Alam Pegunungan Cycloop) from local ethnic adat community elements. “We naturally hope for your prayers of support for all the community elements of the City and Regency of Jayapura. Thereby, eventually the activity (ties) aimed to protect the biodiversity, subsequently maintains the function of this Cycloop Mountain Nature Reserve, may be undertaken accordingly,” stated Jeri, Thursday (7/27).

Still according to Jeri, planting the bamboo seedlings also aims to prevent flooding, because of Cycloop’s existence as a water supplier for Lake Sentani and a clean water provider for the community. “In terms of other agendas, such as traditional feasts, visits or pilgrimages to the Heroes Cemetery, various kind of competitions, as well as socially related activities including courtesy visits,” he explained.

Jeri also appealed to the entire ‘Bumi Cenderawasih’ community to participate in enlivening the commemoration of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia in Papua, as part of, and effort to be thankful for the strives of the deceased heroes who perished in the battlefield. “Naturally, not by taking part in also fighting in this modern era. However, one way is, participating in the protection of the environment around us in a broader sense, its relation to our plan to plant bamboo seedlings to save the Cycloop Nature Reserve,” he emphasized.
