98 Percent of PT Freeport Employees Are Indonesian, 40 Percent Thereof Are Papuans

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) revealed that he used to be reluctant to visit the location of the gold mine owned by Freeport before the Government of Indonesia (GoI) had control over most, or as much as 51 percent of the company’s shares in July of 2018.

“Because, prior to that we were only given 9.3 percent (dividends). For three long years we negotiated extremely stringently, and now we do own a 51majority share,” stated President Joko Widodo.

He also explained that currently as much as 98 percent of Freeport employees are Indonesian nationals/citizens, whereof 40 percent are Papuans.

By the ownership (now) controlled by the Indonesian Government, according to President Joko Widodo, Freeport presently provides multiple benefits for Indonesia compared to before the divestment from Freeport-McMoRan took place. A total of 70 percent of the Freeport revenue presently belongs to the Indonesian Government, he stated.

“Now, we receive 51 percent dividends (from Freeport), the taxes are higher, Non-Tax State Revenue (Penerimaan Negara Bukan Pajak/PNBP) larger, export duties too, are greater. Thus, 70 percent of Freeport revenue is paid to the state,” he added.

President Joko Widodo, before hundreds of Indonesian veterans, on Tuesday stated that the company exploring mining abundance and gold in Papua, Freeport, has become the property of Indonesia over previous control by the United States of America (USA).

“I have just been to Tembagapura visiting Freeport and I would like to convey to the seniors, the elders, that Freeport for the majority is already owned by Indonesia, it’s no longer an American company,” stated Jokowi when officiating at Kongres XII Legiun Veteran Republik Indonesia/LVRI), or the Republic of Indonesia Legion XII Congress, and Musyawarah Nasional XI Persatuan Istri Veteran Republik Indonesia/Piveri, or National Deliberation XI of the RI Veteran Wives on Tuesday.

Besides Freeport, the Government of Indonesia has also acquiesced the Rokan Block Oil and Gas Field in Riau from Chevron USA. In the pipeline is that President Joko Widodo will personally visit the Rokan Block to assess the oil and gas production generated by this exploration location.

‘The Rokan Block is an oil and gas business that has been controlled by Chevron for 97 years. Now, it also is 100 percent owned by ourselves. I haven’t been to check there, yet. In a couple of months, I would like to check whether there is an increase in production, increase in income/revenue, (or) not,” stated President Joko Widodo.

Simultaneously, the Chairman of the LVRI Leadership Council, Major General (retired) Saiful Sulun, explained that congress attendance numbered approximately 300 LVRI, Piveri and Pemuda Panca Marga (Five Clan Youth) members.

Also present at the inauguration of the XII Congress of LVRI and XI National Deliberation of Piveri, were the 6th Republic of Indonesia Vice President Try Sutrisno; Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security, Mahfud MD; Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto; Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharani, and the RI Chief of Police Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
