After Timika, Papua Football Academy Sets Its Sights on Merauke Youths

16 June 2022

Papua Football Academy is forging ahead to scout talent in Papua, following its successful recruitment event in Timika City on the weekend of 11-12 June. Papua Football Academy (PFA) is a boarding school to train Papuan youths for a career in football. After Timika City, Papua Football Academy is now setting its sights on Merauke. The football academy program is part of commitment on the part of PT Freeport Indonesia to build Papuan society, including in the field of sports.

The training team of Papua Football Academy, which is headed by former Indonesian national team coach Wolfgang Pikal, continues to look for the best of Papuan youths born in 2009. Pikal and his team are scouting for youths with specific criteria. In addition to football skills, evaluation will bear on other aspects including aptitude for tactical play, physical fitness, personality, mindset, and ability to grasp coaching instructions.

Those passing preliminary screening will proceed to undergo psychological tests, fingerprint-based genetic potential tests, and medical check-ups. “We are still looking for Papuan youths born in the period spanning from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2009,” Papua Football Academy Technical Director Wolfgang Pikal said. “After finding great talent in Timika, the same opportunity will be offered to Merauke youths who demonstrate the necessary ability."

The Papua Football Academy Talent Search team arrived in Merauke on Wednesday (15/6/2022) and were promptly greeted by Merauke Regent Romanus Mbaraka at Mopah Airport. Merauke’s regent is full of support and high expectations for the success of the PFA Talent Search program, as indicated in his message that the people of Merauke are eager and excited for Papua Football Academy’s presence to bring about Papuan-born outstanding football players. "We look forward to the genesis of Papuan-born football players of the stamp of Rully Nere at Papua Football Academy. This is an excellent program as it does not omit formal academic education for its students,” uttered Romanus Mbaraka, who was overjoyed to meet legendary Indonesian footballer Rully Nere, who is a PFA advisor.

The PFA Talent Search in Merauke will be launched at the Musamus University Stadium on Saturday and Sunday (18-19 June 2022) beginning at 8 am local time. Those eligible to participate will have been born in the period spanning from 1 January to 31 December 2009, who are currently studying in grade 7 (middle school), are in good physical condition, and are interested in joining PFA and staying in the boarding school in Timika. “We are ready to assist PFA in its talent search in Merauke City. Merauke has plenty of youths with talent for football and whose physiques are ideal,” Askab Merauke chairman Viktor Ohoiwutun asserted.

Calls have been made for the public in Merauke City to support the PFA Talent Search program and to participate in a photography competition offering prizes worth 25 million rupiahs total for 10 winners from 3 cities: Timika, Merauke, and Jayapura. Photos of PFA Talent Search activities must be posted on their respective IG accounts under the tag heading #PFACARIBAKAT. Full information on the PFA Talent Search Photo Competition ("Lomba Foto PFA Cari Bakat") can be viewed at the official Instagram account of Papua Football Academy. The Papua Football Academy program is set to begin running on the same schedule as for the new school year.
