Airlangga Hartarto Is Optimistic that Freeport’s Manyar Smelter Will Be Completed by December 2023

02 February 2023

Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Economy Airlangga Hartarto is optimistic construction of the Manyar smelter belonging to PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) will be completed on time in December 2023. Currently, the smelter’s construction progress has reached 51.7%.

While observing the construction of the Manyar smelter in the JIIPE Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Gresik, East Java, Airlangga opined PTFI will be able to ensure the project continues to completion. “I deeply appreciate PTFI’s hard work to meet the Manyar smelter’s construction progress target, which now stands at 51.7 percent, consistent with the S-curve approved by the government. This progress is an outstanding achievement that serves as an example for other companies, in particular as the Manyar smelter project’s workforce is comprised of 98 percent of Indonesian nationals,” he said in a written statement on Thursday (02/02/23).

Airlangga went on to explain the Manyar smelter will need to undergo the pre-commissioning and commissioning processes before commencing operation, as is the norm with such plants. The pre-commissioning and commissioning stages will ensure all facilities function faultlessly, and this will take around five months prior to the commencement of operation in May 2024. The Manyar smelter design will make it the biggest single-line smelter in the world, with a production capacity to process 1.7 million dry metric tons (dmt) of copper concentrate into up to 600,000 tons of copper cathode per year. In addition to a copper concentrate refining and processing facility, the Manyar smelter will be equipped with auxiliary facilities such as a Precious Metal Refinery (PMR).

The PMR facility will function to process anode slime produced in the copper concentrate refining process into gold and silver. This facility is projected to have the capacity to produce on average 35 tons to a maximum of 60 tons of gold per year. “The PMR auxiliary facility enables upstream to downstream gold production inside the country, and this will provide added value for Indonesia’s bank balance,” Airlangga added.

Meanwhile, the President Director of PTFI, Tony Wenas, ensured that the construction of the smelter could meet the S-curve timeline target that had been approved by the government. “We will ensure smelter development meets the targeted S-curve timeline approved by the government. We continue to intensively coordinate with stakeholders towards accelerating the completion of the Manyar smelter,” Tony Wenas stated on the same occasion.

As of December 2022, the investment cost of the Manyar smelter project amounted to 1.63 billion US dollars, or equivalent to 25 trillion rupiahs, out of a total investment cost of three billion US dollars, equivalent to 45 trillion rupiahs.
