All Out, Freeport to Make Rp. 54.7 Trillion Available In 2023

27 December 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is projected to issue capital expenditure (Capex) amounting to US$3.5 billion, or equivalent to Rp.54.7 trillion (exchange rate Rp.15.051 per US$) in the year 2023. This figure is higher over last year’s Capex, which reached US$1.5 billion. “Next year, our Capex will maybe be around US$3.5 billion,” explained Freeport Indonesia President Director, Tony Wenas, to CNBC Indonesia during ‘Mining Zone’, quoted Tuesday (12/27).

In terms of the specifications, Indonesia’s Capex value of US$1.5 billion this year is outside of/excluding the budget spent in development for smelters this year, which reached US$1 billion. “Our Capex for this year is US$1.5 billion, which doesn’t include the smelter, for the smelter itself it’s somewhere around US$1 billion. Thereby, the total becomes around US$2.5 billion,” he stated.

As previously reported, Freeport is in the process of building a new smelter at the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE), in Gresik, East Java. Tony mentioned that presently the smelter construction progress has already reached 47.4%. And, by the end of this year, according to him, the development progress is estimated to be able to reach 50%.

The smelter with an investment of US$3 billion, or approximately Rp.45 trillion is said to become the largest single-line smelter in the world. This smelter will process 1.7 million tons of copper concentrate per year into 600 thousand tons of copper cathodes products per year. In addition, said smelter will also generate 35-50 tons of gold and 100-150 tons of silver per year.

Currently, PT Freeport Indonesia also already owns a smelter, which is already operational – also located in Gresik. The company collaborates with Mitsubishi forming PT Smelting. PT Smelting, which has been in operation since 1996 last, produces 300 thousand tons of copper cathodes from the processed result/yield of approximately 3 million tons of concentrate annually.

Important to note, PT Smelting is presently also in the process of expanding, or increasing its capacity. The capacity increase at the existing smelter is scheduled to increase by 30%, or approximately 300 thousand tons of concentrate per year. This signifies, production of copper cathodes will be even greater.
