A relaxed and comfortable atmosphere colours the Amungme Coffee House on Jalan Malcon, Timika Indah, in the Timika sub-district of Mimika Baru in the Mimika Regency, Mimika.

The coming and going of visitors re-designated the building which was transformed into a coffee house managed by the Amungme Gold Coffee Cooperatives one of the business creations of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) under the auspices of its Community Development Program since 1998.

Friendly waiters and baristas at the coffee house warmly welcome every arriving customer,  a moment later they also offer the customers a variety of coffee blends and snacks which the coffee house also has available. “We have a quite a variety of original Papua coffee to select from at the coffee house,” one of the baristas says in a friendly manner.

Yes, that’s only a short description of the atmosphere at the Amungme Gold Coffee House. Created and further developed by PT Freeport Indonesia under the auspices of the company’s Community Development, it is aimed to help to advance coffee growers especially in the regency of Mimika.

“It is hoped that via this cooperative coordination will be more intensified. Coffee growers are being properly nurtured starting from plant maintenance to harvesting and selling the gardens’ produce,” clarifies Amungme Gold Cooperative Chairman, Jeremias Egatmang, initiating the conversation.

He continued to say that coaching the coffee farmer until the Amungme Coffee House was finally created is optimally carried out with the intention the coffee farmer in Mimika will be able to eventually enjoy the benefits of his labour and become prosperous.

Because the processing and marketing of coffee at the Amungme Coffee House is an end product of combined harvesting efforts that involves the entire community in the Mimika Regency. The Amungme Coffee House collects the coffee beans from the farmer and then starts the drying process until it is ready for brewing, consumption and marketing.

PT Freeport Indonesia Amungme Gold Coffee House is one of Freeport’s many creative efforts under its Community Development Program since 1998. “What is clear is that all the coffee in this coffee house come from the farmers. We collect, process and market it, including the coffee brewed in this place,” he said.

At the same time Jeremias Egatmang remarks that Amungme Coffee is produced by the local community living in the highlands of Mimika Regency and surroundings area of PT Freeport Indonesia’s operating site.

Convincingly he says that the farmers’ coffee possesses a very special taste to coffee connoisseurs and lovers. It is not inferior to any other coffee produced in other areas in Indonesia.

Regarding production, currently it is around 3 tons per year. With maximal guidance it is anticipated that production will continue to increase to enable it to meet demands from areas outside the region which are many.

Therefore, the guidance given to coffee farmers in the highlands is on a continuous basis to guarantee that coffee plants are of good quality likewise at the time of harvesting.

Considering it takes a very long time before the results are known. "It might take some 5 to 10 years to know this. That’s why our guidance to farmers is always carried out intensely and with great care,” he says.

With regards to active membership in the Amungme Gold Coffee Cooperative there are already 154 coffee farmers registered. In future he hopes this number will rise and that all communities will plant coffee to support the economy.
