PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) wins first place in the Achievement of Investment Realization for Foreign Investment category in East Java. The award is directly given by the Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa to the Vice President Director of PTFI, Jenpino Ngabdi in the series of East Java Investment Week 2022 events in Surabaya (14/9).
PTFI wins the award because of its investment in building a new smelter in the JIIPE Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Gresik, East Java with a total value of Rp 43 trillion. This new smelter is PTFI’s second smelter and has a capacity of 1.7 million DMT of copper concentrate per year. PTFI’s first smelter was built in 1996 with Mitsubishi which create PT Smelting.
President Director of PTFI, Tony Wenas said the progress of this smelter construction until July 2022 has reached 36.2 percent and has spent an investment of USD 1.2 billion. By the end of 2022, the progress will reach 50% and it is targeted to be complete by the end of 2023, which later will be continued with the pre-commissioning and commissioning process, then the smelter will operate in May 2024.
“It is possible for PTFI to purify all domestic copper concentrate later when PTFI’s new smelter operates. Moreover, to make more downstream industries such as cable and electric vehicle factories, they can use this PTFI’s smelter product so it can give more added value. This award indeed motivates PTFI to continue giving a positive contribution to the state and the country,” explained Tony.
High Investment in East Java
Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa in her speech explained the growth of investment and economy in East Java are the result of all parties' synergy. “Investment interest in East Java is proven by the high performance of investment that recorded in the Central Statistics Agency for II quarter of 2022. During that period, the investment realization in East Java increases by 69.2% (YoY). This investment realization even exceeds the national realization of 35.5% (YoY),” said Khofifah.
She added that the investment performance in the II quarter consists of the realization of Foreign Investment that increase by 198.1%. Meanwhile, the growth of Domestic Investment is 34.1%. At the end of her speech, Khofifah expressed her appreciation to all parties that contributed to the investment and economic growth in East Java.
