Coordinating Ministry of Economy Appreciates PTFI’s Smelter Operation

21 June 2025

Gresik, 21 June 2025 – The Coordinating Ministry of Economy has expressed appreciation for PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) resumption of operation at the Gresik Smelter, sooner than had been scheduled. This was conveyed by the Deputy for Energy and Mineral Resources Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Elen Setiadi, who was reached during a visit to the PTFI smelter in the Gresik Special Economic Zone (SEZ), on Saturday.

“We had received a report and had duly conducted a field visit to observe the completion of recovery work and resumption of operation, with operating capacity even exceeding 40%. As such, we appreciate PTFI for successfully speeding up the recovery process. We appreciate PTFI for its ability to escalate the recovery process,” Elen said.

Elen voiced the hope that the downstream process would steadily continue and increase so that President Prabowo’s expectations could be achieved soon. “We still require the completion of several technical matters by PTFI. The first is to ensure the ramp-up process to attain 100% capacity is completed with no setbacks. Also, we expect the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry to increase supervision together with PTFI and conduct early preventive measures against further disruptions in the field,” Elen said.

Joining the coordinating ministry during this visit were delegates from the Ministry of ESDM, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Investment, the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Industry, and the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE). Also, several representatives from MIND ID and SEZ were present. Also, several representatives from MIND ID and SEZ were present. Deputy President Director of PTFI, Jenpino Ngabdi accompanied the governmental delegation during this tour.

Jenpino Ngabdi expressed appreciation for the visit by the Coordinating Ministry of Economy and the support demonstrated. "We thank the Coordinating Ministry of Economy and other ministries for their visit and support. As an integrated upstream to the downstream mining company, we remain committed to fully supporting the mineral resources downstream program established by the government,” Jenpino averred.

Jenpino added that the PTFI smelter successfully resumed operating in May, sooner than was originally scheduled. The resumption of smelter operation had been slated for the third week of June; however, the recovery process was able to be completed ahead of time in mid-May.

The PTFI smelter has now entered the ramping-up phase to increase production capacity gradually from the current 40% to 100% by December 2025.

During this visit, Elen Setiadi and her entourage toured some facilities in the smelter area, specifically the Common Gas Cleaning Plant (CGCP), the Sulfuric Acid Plant (SAP), and the Central Control Building (CCB), intending to personally observe the PTFI smelter’s readiness towards achieving the target of full production capacity by December 2025.

The resumption of PTFI's smelter operation marks a significant step in strengthening the nation's industrial self-reliance and enhancing Indonesia's position in the global market. Aligned with the government's vision for Golden Indonesia 2045, PTFI remains committed to delivering tangible contributions and creating added value for the nation and the state.
