Digitalization Makes Women’s Work at Freeport Mining Site Easier

16 November 2022

CEO of Freeport said digitalization has been one of the many challenges faced by the company. But it can also become a great opportunity for women to work at mining industry, especially at Freeport.

Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. Richard C. Adkerson said through digital transformations, women employees can conduct mining activities digitally, shifting the conventional way of mining used to be underground.

“We develop technology to improve our operational activities' efficiency, security, and environmental friendly. Through this digital transformation, we can carry out operations with a new way to expand our workforce. For example, women can digitally operate the mine by using AI equipment,” he said to detik.com in Nusa Dua, Bali, Wednesday (16/11/2022).

Richard said digital transformation has changed mining operations before. His party ensures to always carry out digital development in the mining industry.

“Thus, our operational activities are getting better by using modern, robotics, and AI technologies. That’s why we invest in it,” he said.

Previously, the President of Freeport McMoRan Inc., Kathleen L. Quirk shared the company’s effort to increase the number of women employees in the mining industry. She said her party provides training for women employees to improve their skills and abilities.

This statement was stated by Kathleen during the B20 Summit Indonesia agenda with the theme ‘Investing in Inclusive Growth for a Resilient Future’, at BNDCC, Nusa Dua, Bali, Monday (14/11) yesterday.

“We provide training, and with this training, we get a big return on those investments, from the MSMEs that provide services to our businesses and operations," she said.

She considers people who work in the mining industry to be tough and resilient considering this industry fluctuates. Therefore, the collaboration between stakeholders is needed to face challenges in the mining industry.

“In the mining industry, you have to be resilient. There are ups and downs. But the collaboration with communities and all stakeholders wins the day whether we are successful or not,”
