Encourage the Improvement of Human Resources Quality in Papua

13 July 2023

The quality of human resources (HR) in Papua is strengthened through government programs or in collaboration with the private sector. Specific skills are also considered important to meet the needs of industrial skilled workers.

Vice President Maruf Amin asked for the development of formal education, non-formal education, including vocational education, to be developed in Papua. Thus, the quality of human resources in Papua can be developed.

"The government is taking sides in improving the quality of indigenous Papuans. This can be done through formal education, and we will always develop non-formal education through job training centers," said the Vice President after visiting the Nemangkawi Mining Institute, Kuala Kencana, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, Wednesday (12/7/2023).

The Vice President asked for more training in Papua, such as in information technology, agriculture, and welding. At the training center built by PT Freeport Indonesia, the Nemangkawi Mining Institute, the training is also to meet the need for skilled workers in the mining sector. Increasing the competence of the productive age population is important to spur economic growth.

For this reason, several strategies have been adopted by the government, including the transformation of vocational education from upstream to downstream. So, the focus is not only on theoretical aspects, but also on practical applications, strengthening the link and match, or alignment, of vocational education and training institutions with the industrial sector, as well as transforming vocational training centers (BLK). This is done by cooperating with vocational education and training.

Transformation

In addition to building school infrastructure, PT Freeport Indonesia is expected to transform vocational education from upstream to downstream. "It is hoped the support from the industrial world, such as PT Freeport Indonesia, will not be limited to corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs but also involve ongoing collaboration," said the Vice President. "Developed countries recognize the importance of vocational education in building quality human resources. Indonesia must implement a similar process," he said.

The President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas, explained strengthening education makes Papuans compete with residents outside Papua. For this reason, training and education are provided to employees, prospective employees, and the general public.

At PT Freeport Indonesia, about 40 percent of employees are native Papuans. On the board of directors, there are nine native Papuans, while in the managerial ranks, there are 130 people.

The Nemangkawi Mining Institute is a work-training center for the young generation of Papua. Students can take part in job training, from internships to becoming mining operators and other skills. Graduates become skilled workers ready to work. The Nemangkawi Mining Institute consists of 15 engineering departments and 3 non-technical departments. Since 2003, there have been 4,000 people trained.
