Freeport and Uncen Set to Produce Excellent Human Resources in Papua, Collaborate to Build Science Center

05 April 2022

Towards bringing about excellent human resources in Papua, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is collaborating with Cendrawasih University (Uncen) to reinforce Uncen as a center of excellence.

This is materializing among others through signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between PTFI and Uncen over commitment for construction of the Freeport Indonesia Building as a Center for Science and Partnership in the Cenderawasih University campus. "PTFI has engaged in collaboration with Uncen since 1996 through various link and match programs encompassing research, internships, guest lectures, and other activities,” PTFI President Director Tony Wenas stated in an official release which Kompas. com received (5/4/2022).

"This time PTFI and Uncen are entering a pivotal milestone, in which PTFI will build an academic building on the grounds of the Uncen campus that will function as a center of science and partnership for students,” Tony Wenas stated. PTFI hopes the building will be of assistance to Uncen in grooming human resources and young generations in Papua to achieve excellence. Signing of the MoU on the Uncen building was conducted by PTFI President Director Tony Wenas and Uncen Rector Apolo Safanpo on Tuesday, 5 April 2022 at Hotel Rimba Papua, Timika.

Growing and Developing Alongside the People

On the same occasion, Uncen Rector Apolo Safanpo stated his belief that no business will succeed amid a failed society. “Freeport’s presence cannot be dissociated from Papua, and Freeport’s commitment to grow and develop alongside the people of Papua must be appreciated,” Apolo said. Uncen was the first higher education institution to be established in Papua, producing thousands of graduates so far.

Apolo voiced appreciation for PTFI support and expressed the hope that the Freeport Indonesia Building for Science and Partnership will assist Uncen in implementing the Tridharma higher education philosophy of education, research, and public service.

The Science Center building provided by PTFI in assistance will be built on the grounds of the Uncen campus in Jayapura, under a green building concept promoting sustainability and Eco friendliness. The three-storey building will have a total floor area of 2,765 square meters, and will consist of 18 classrooms, a lecturers’ room, an auditorium with a capacity of 230 occupants, and a roof top equipped with solar cell panels that will also serve as learning material for students.
