PT Freeport Indonesia is in the midst of building a refining plant or smelter in the Gresik Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in East Java. This smelter is predicted to be the largest single copper smelter in the world. This was conveyed by the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer at Freeport McMoRan Inc. Richard C.Adkerson, during a talk with media crew of detik.com on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali.
He believes this smelter will be one of the largest in the world and the second copper smelter in Indonesia The value of this project is US$ 3 billion or the equivalent of IDR, 46.5 trillion (Exchange Rate of IDR 15.500). “This project is worth more than US$ 3 billion. It will be the biggest smelter in the entire world and will be the second smelter in Indonesia. “This project is not only big but also intricate. But construction is continuing and we are committed to finalize it soon,” he added.
Adkerson also confirmed that the construction of the smelter is expected to be completed in early 2024 despite various challenges. The development of the project in East Java is running smoothly. It is on schedule for completion in 2024 hopefully early 2024,” he said.
Richard continued to say there were indeed many challenges being faced during its construction. He mentioned among others the Covid 19 pandemic which affected many workers, the supply chain and other impacts. We will do it as quickly as possible in a responsible and safe manner” he continued.

Jokowi hopes that the construction of the smelter will attract other industries to come in making the economy of Indonesia grow more extensively. “I hope that PT Freeport Indonesia’s presence in the special economic zone in Gresik will be attracting other industries to invest here, especially the copper derivative industry,” Jokowi said.
