Freeport Copper and Gold Production Up by More than 60 Percent

13 December 2021

PT Freeport Indonesia’s copper and gold ore production has been steadily rising  throughout 2021. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining district in Mimika Regency, Papua. “Hopefully by the end of this year our production will meet the target. Compared with last year, this year has certainly achieved much better,” PT Freeport Indonesia Director Claus Wamafma said as cited by Antara, on Monday (13/12/2021).

Freeport Indonesia thanked all stakeholders, whether employees, communities near the mining area, the government, or TNI and Police, for fully supporting the mining company’s operation.  From the aspect of safety at work, this year no fatal incident was reported in Freeport’s mining operation.

Over the last several years Freeport has continued to expand its underground production capacity, in particular after production in the open pit was completed in 2019. “Underground mining is on track, there have been no hurdles, all is running normally despite our encountering a serious challenge from the COVID-19 pandemic," Claus said.

Overall, COVID-19 transmission in the Freeport operating area in Timika, Papua and in Indonesia in general is showing a declining trend, and the expectation is for Freeport to achieve an even greater target in 2022. "When we are able to control the COVID-19 situation and employees can work earnestly without concerns, we will surely maintain production. Ultimately all stakeholders will enjoy the benefits from the company’s operations,” he said.

In the third quarter of 2021, PT Freeport reported an increase in gold production as well as copper ore production and claimed to have attained significantly greater volumes compared with previous periods. According to data released by Freeport McMoran, Freeport Indonesia contributed the greatest mineral production so far up to the third quarter of this year, totaling 956 million pounds of copper ore. This was an increase of 76.05 percent year-on-year, as in the same period in 2020 the company’s copper ore production amounted to just 543 million pounds.

As of the third quarter of 2021, the company’s gold production came to 968 thousand ounces, or an increase of 67.76 percent compared with the previous year’s production of 577 thousand ounces. The company was reported to have achieved 946 million pounds in copper sales, or an 82.62 percent increase year-on-year.
