Freeport Distributes 56.380 Tons of Nine Basic Necessities for the Community to Welcome Christmas and New Year

14 December 2022

Through PT Freeport Indonesia ‘Kasih Natal PTFI 2022’ program, or ‘PTFI’s 2022 Christmas Love’, PT Freeport Indonesia disbursed Sembilan Bahan Pokok/Sembako, or Nine Basic Necessities aid to communities in the Mimika Mountains, Timika City and its surroundings. This Nine Basic Necessities aid, disbursed through the PT Freeport Indonesia Community Relations Department, totals 56.360 tons.

Through a press release received by seputarpapua.com, Wednesday (14/12), PTFI’s Christmas Love Program 2022 represents a manifestation of PT Freeport Indonesia’s social responsibility and commitment in bringing a positive impact to the communities in Mimika, particularly the two major ethnic tribes in Mimika (Amungme and Kamoro), who are directly impacted by PT Freeport Indonesia’s mining process, as well as encouraging empowerment to the layers of people in need.

The PTFI’s Christmas Love Program 2022 is distributed in phases, namely from December 9 to14, 2022. The total beneficiaries of this assistance are recorded to be 73 local churches of the Amungme-Kamoro community and the other brotherhood ethnic tribes. A total of 28.865 tons of ‘Sembako’ to be distributed to 34 churches in the highland, including 6 churches in the Aroanop Valley, 4 churches in Waa Banti, 8 churches in the Tsinga Valley, 6 churches in the Hoya Valley, and 10 churches in the Jila Valley. The distribution of this aid was transported using helicopters specially chartered by Freeport. No less than 31 flights were provided by PTFI, sparing nothing to facilitate the distribution of the Sembako aid to the destined villages.

Along with the delivery of the Christmas ‘Sembako’ aid, PTFI also provided an opportunity for the residents/congregations to assist in depositing their groceries to the village. Meanwhile, aid for the ethnic Amungme tribe communities living in Timika City and its surroundings amounted to 21.150 tons, distributed by means of 30 local churches.

Meanwhile, for the lowland areas, PTFI distributed aid for communities in seven villages, namely Nayaro, Nawaripi, Koperapoka, Ayuka, Tipuka, Amawita and Fanamo, amounting to 6.345 tons of Sembako, which was distributed using sea transportation.

PT Freeport Indonesia Vice President Community Relations/Social Responsibility, Nathan Kum, delivered a ‘Merry Christmas December 25, 2022, and Happy New Year January 2023’ message to all the Amungme, Kamoro and Five Brotherhood ethnic tribes residing in the Mimika Regency. Nathan Kum also hoped that the community does not regard this Christmas aid from PT Freeport Indonesia in terms of its nominal worth or quantity, instead in terms of the company’s concern and its sincere intent.

Having said that, as long as this company exists, is running well, and its production running smoothly, it will always be concerned for the communities in its surroundings. ‘Therefore, let’s take care of this company so that it may participate in providing meaningful benefits for the communities in Mimika,” he stated. “Implementing the disbursing/distributing of this PT Freeport Indonesia aid, we are collaborating with the Regional Administration, through the villages and districts apparatus, as well as receiving assistance from the Indonesian Military security forces stationed in the distribution locations,” he concluded.
