Freeport Donates Rp 15 Billion to Make PON XX Papua Success

PT Freeport Indonesia donates assistance of Rp 15 billion to participate in the success of the National Sports Week (PON) XX in Papua that will be held on 2-15 October 2021. This support is meant for Papua in organizing national-scale sports events.

VP for Government Relations of PT Freeport Indonesia, Jonny Lingga said his party is committed to making PON successful since the beginning of Papua being set as the host in 2013. Besides, he explained that PT Freeport also help PON Grand Committee in mobilizing sports competition equipment in the Mimika cluster. “We are committed to the success of PON in Papua,” he said, cited from Antara.

He added his party hopes the implementation of PON XX in Papua can run smoothly even though it is still during the COVID-19 pandemic. Freeport even has prepared bonuses for Papuan athletes who can win medals in PON XX. “Not only funding support worth Rp 15 billion, but PTFI will also give bonuses to Papuan athletes who win, it's just that the amount of bonuses that will be given is still under discussion by the management of PT Freeport Indonesia," he said.

Furthermore, Freeport also helped build the Mimika Sport Complex to support the implementation of PON XX Papua. This sports complex that was built on an area of 12.5 hectares, cost US$ 33 million or the equivalent of Rp 400 billion. This sports complex has indoor and outdoor stadium facilities. Mimika Sports Complex that is located on Poros Timika-Sp5, Timika, was built in 2014. Construction was completed in 2018. This sports complex has several supporting facilities and infrastructure. Such as Indoor Stadium, Outdoor Stadium, and dormitories. The Indoor Stadium has a capacity of 5,000 people and is intended for volleyball, basketball, and badminton.

While the Outdoor Stadium has various facilities for javelin throwing, long jump, high jump, and shot put. Then the short distance, middle distance, synthetic 400-meter track for warm-up/international standard training, short distance running track, and 200-meter long jump. The stadium can accommodate 2,000 people in the west stand and 1,300 people in the east stand. Finally, the dormitory is divided into two buildings with a capacity of 50 males and females each and for officials. The hostel is also equipped with a small gymnasium for sports, a place of worship and a recreation room.
