TIMIKA, November 16, 2024 – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), together with the Diocese of Timika through the Maria Bintang Laut Cooperative (KMBL), provided carpentry skills training to 20 Kamoro youths from assisted villages in the South Coast region of Mimika Regency.
These youths come from Nayaro, Nawaripi, Koperapoka, Ayuka, and Tipuka. The training took place over 10 days from November 5-15 at the Diocese of Timika Complex, Central Papua.
"Basic Construction skills are one of the fundamental capabilities needed to support the acceleration of development and economic improvement of residents. Freeport is training young people from five assisted villages so they have basic carpentry skills," said Senior Vice President (SVP) of Sustainable Development PTFI, Nathan Kum.
Nathan said this training is the second session of 2024, with the first session having taken place last July. Carpenter instructors from PTFI's Nemangkawi Mining Institute (IPN) served as facilitators and taught various basic skills such as carpentry, electrical repairs, and making building cement mixtures.
"PTFI together with the Diocese of Timika strongly supports Kamoro youth from five assisted villages to improve their carpentry skills. It is hoped that after participating in this training, the participants can continue to practice the knowledge gained," he said.
One of the Kamoro youths representing the training participants experienced direct benefits from the knowledge received. "This Carpenter training activity really helps us, adds to our knowledge. From what we didn't know, we now know how to build houses. Thank you to the Nemangkawi Mining Institute for providing theoretical and practical training," said Kelik Utauru, a training participant from Tipuka village.
Kelik explained that in the carpentry skills training, he received classroom theory and daily field practice. "This includes being taught how to install building frame iron and how to attach ceramics to walls, which we initially didn't know (how to do). Maybe at home we can buy ceramics and install them ourselves. This is very helpful," he said.
The Chairman of Maria Bintang Laut Cooperative (KMBL) Benyamin Meo, who is also a representative of the Diocese of Timika, hopes that through this training, Kamoro youth can build their villages without having to seek experts from outside the village or even outside Papua.
Nathan added that Freeport Indonesia continues its commitment to promoting community empowerment by improving the skills of residents living around the mining operations area for greater prosperity in the future.
