Freeport Invests $122 Million in Community Development and Empowerment Programs

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is committed to assist in accelerating the development of special autonomy in Papua. President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas, said Freeport’s social investment program runs continuously to provide the best benefits from the company’s presence.

The commitment that continues to be held by the company to participate in the development in the surroundings of the company’s jobsite is being materialized through programs in a variety of fields, among them health, education, economy, culture and infrastructure.

In the year 2022, PT Freeport Indonesia invested approximately $122 million (Singapore dollars) in community development and empowerment programs. Freeport continues its partnership efforts with the government/administration and various stakeholders as part of its sustainability efforts. “In the educational field we have established and manage five dormitories in Papua together with our partner(s),” explained Tony Wenas. In the year 2022, dormitory program participants numbered 1.530 students. In addition, Freeport also provided/funded some 1.200 scholarships, where its total has already exceeded 12.000 since the year 1996.

The Vice president of the Republic of Indonesia. Ma’ruf Amin, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 paid a visit to Institut Perkembangan Nemangkawi (IPN) which has been established by Freeport since the year 2002.  Tony stated IPN is a vocational education institute for the enhancement of Papuan human resources to meet industrial needs; having 15 engineering majors and 3 non-engineering programs. Of its students, 90% are ethnic Papuan students and in total has already reached 4.000 graduates; and of whom, 2.500 are already employed at PT Freeport Indonesia; whilst approximately 300 graduates are already employed by PT Freeport Indonesia’s contractors. “In terms of managing social investment programs, it goes without saying we also increase alignment with national policies applied in community development and empowerment programs, as well as regional development plans,” he concluded.
