Freeport Rayakan HUT Kemerdekaan ke-77, Wujudkan Indonesia Tangguh

16 August 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) held a ceremony to commemorate the 77th anniversary of Indonesia's independence at the company's three work locations: Tembagapura, Kuala Kencana, and Jakarta.

In Tembagapura, the ceremony was led by the Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Bahlil Lahadalia. This also marked the first time that the Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM led a ceremony at PTFI, which also welcomed a new era of normality following the celebration of the Indonesian Independence Day at PTFI, which was held for a limited period of 2 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Carrying the theme "Recover Faster, Rise Stronger from Our Homes," the activity was attended by the employees and contractors within PTFI, representatives of both central and regional governments, students and teachers in the company, TNI, Polri, as well as community representatives in Company environment.

The flag ceremony procession opened with the presentation of songs by YPJ Tembagapura students, each entitled Independence Day and My Homeland. The ceremonial inspector then handed over Indonesia's national flag to be flown to tray bearer Anastasia R.N. Kanath.

Meanwhile, the flag raisers consisted of Simon Aristotle Blessia, Orlando Fonataba, and Rafael Wamblolo. They were escorted by Sergeant Endah Suryono, while the reading of the text of the proclamation was carried out by Tony Wenas as President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia.

While giving the ceremonial mandate, Bahlil expressed his appreciation for PTFI, which continues to grow with the children of Indonesia, especially Papua, by providing the greatest benefit to all stakeholders.

According to Bahlil, investment in Indonesia drives the country's economic growth, especially by creating jobs and increasing people's welfare.

"The investment that PTFI has made through the development of underground mines in Papua and the construction of a smelter in Gresik helps the government to equalize investment and develop industrial downstream, as well as create a multiplier effect through job creation for local communities to continue to encourage regional and national economic growth," said Bahlil.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency stated that Papua was the province with the highest economic growth rate in Indonesia, which was 14.38 percent in the second quarter of 2022. The mining and quarrying sector contributed 43.95 percent to this economic growth.

This is inseparable from the increase in PT Freeport Indonesia's production throughout the second quarter of 2022, which amounted to 407 million pounds of copper and 473 thousand ounces of gold. PTFI President Director Tony Wenas stated that this year PTFI targets to produce 1.6 billion pounds of copper and 1.6 million ounces of gold.

"This production achievement is the result of the cooperation of the sons and daughters of the nation at PT Freeport Indonesia with all stakeholders, including the people who live side by side with us. This year's commemoration of the Republic of Indonesia's Independence Day will spur our enthusiasm to be more active in fulfilling our independence by continuing to work and increase our contribution to the nation and state," said Tony.

He explained that the achievements of PTFI's operational activities contribute directly to the development and empowerment of communities that are in harmony and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (TPB), otherwise known as the SDGs. Tony emphasized that in implementing sustainable programs, PTFI prioritizes multi-stakeholder partnerships.

"PTFI's partnership with the Mimika Regency government and the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK) in various community development efforts is our commitment to realizing the achievement of the SDGs in Papua, especially Mimika. We also carried out this multi-stakeholder strategic partnership in preparing the Regional Action Plan (RAD). The SDGs include a roadmap for accelerating the achievement of the SDGs during 2020-2024," said Tony.

In addition to the flag ceremony, which was held at an altitude of 2,000 m above sea level and the temperature was below 20 degrees Celsius, PTFI also held a cultural carnival and an archipelago culinary festival in which all attendees enjoyed at the Tembagapura Sports Hall.
