Freeport’s Big Boss Showed Off to Jokowi: 97% Indonesian Citizens

The Chairman of Freeport McMoRan, Richard Adkerson, showed off the data of the employees of PT Freeport Indonesia to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). Close to 100% of Freeport Indonesia’s employees are Indonesian citizens.  “To date, we employ 30 thousand; 97% are Indonesian workers and over 40% are Papuans,” he stated in a friendly gathering (meet and greet) of President Jokowi and Freeport Indonesia employees in Tembagapura, Papua on Wednesday (8/31).

According to the employment data of PT Freeport Indonesia as of March 2021, the exact number of the company’s employees is 27.875 employees. This number comprises employees directly under Freeport Indonesia and contractors.

Workers directly employed under Freeport Indonesia are 6.329 people. Of those, the composition is 3.576 people, or 56.5% are non-Papuan Indonesian citizens; 2.610 people, or 41,2% are Papuan Indonesian citizens; whereas the remaining are 143 people, or 2.3% expatriates. When added up it indicates that Freeport Indonesia employees who are Indonesian citizens number 97.7% comprising both Papuan, as well as non-Papuan residents.

Richard also showed off that the ethnic Papuan employees were also developed/advanced to occupy many important positions. According to said data, as many as 9 ethnic Papuan citizens occupy the position of Vice President, and as many as 57 people are managers and senior level employees. “This supported by Freeport-McMoRan ultimately has resulted in us having a team of Indonesian employees who have grown into becoming seniors,” he concluded.
