Freeport Successfully Helps Nine Native Amungme-Kamoro Entrepreneurs to Become Self-Reliant

15 December 2022

PT Freeport Indonesia has successfully mentored and sponsored nine entrepreneurs who are native Amungme and Kamoro under a Development Program for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (PP-UMKM) to attain self-reliance.

The nine entrepreneurs engaged in the business of providing support services to PTFI as well as in trade, and who received mentoring and sponsorship for around 5-10 years are Hironimus Urmami of CV Amamapare, Petrus Nomomi of CV Omanikurup, Minna Weya of CV Kibielobe, Yohanes Mamiri of PT Tairipa Putra Mandiri, Tena Murib of CV Nukport Jaya, Yohanes Fatie of PT Peluang Utama, Bernadina Jamang of CV Anggait Kineming, Isak Bukaleng of CV Sinar Putra Papua and Kelara Magai of Jamal Papua Mart.

The nine entrepreneurs were presented with certificates of appreciation and commemorative tablets from PTFI, on Wednesday (14/12/2022)  at Rimba Papua Hotel, in recognition of their successfully undergoing a mentoring period and achieving self-reliance.

PTFI UMKM Section Chief Ronny Yawan conveyed thanks to all who assisted in supporting Freeport’s entrepreneurship development program for native Papuans (OAP). "Freeport’s goal is to provide affirmative action for local communities towards enabling them to attain self-reliance and to compete with our brothers from other places,” he said.

He said so far under this program Freeport has helped 43 local entrepreneurs to become self-reliant and they now come under the group  making major contributions for Timika and outside Timika. There are currently around 198 businesses owned by native Papuans who have undergone mentoring from PT Freeport. "Today we are showing our appreciation, as throughout the mentoring period to guide and counsel them to succeed in attaining self-reliance, we went through ups and downs together. This is an achievement worthy of appreciation, and that is what we are offering as part of today’s event," he said.

He voiced the hope that those who have successfully made the grade will inspire other UMKM entrepreneurs and act as their role models. “Hopefully, this is beneficial and will help this region to be more prepared and competitive, to grow and build the economy in our beloved regency,” he ended.

PTFI VP for Community Development Nathan Kum said Freeport will remain committed to empowering local communities in Papua, specifically in Mimika. "We are just helping to provide support and guidance for businesses to become self-reliant. We would also like to thank the users, banks, the government, and all who have assisted in supporting and empowering the communities together with Freeport," he said in his address.

He similarly voice appreciation of the entrepreneurs who successfully overcame challenges throughout the mentoring period, and who remained committed to becoming self-reliant. “Today we will be sending them off as self-reliant entrepreneurs, who although not immediately achieving major accomplishments and who started out small, like the banana plant growing from a small seed they will grow to become big and bear much fruit,” he said.

His message to the entrepreneurs was to learn from experience, and to share what they have learned with others who are yet to participate in the program. “Doing business is not easy, there are numerous hurdles to overcome, and communication must be consistently built. If there is a will, there is a way, and Freeport’s sending you off right now as self-reliant entrepreneurs does not mean  we are abandoning you, but with communication we can help each other on various matters,” he concluded.

The Division Head of Micro, Small and Medium Business (UMKM) at the Cooperatives and UMLM Office, Samuel Yogi voiced the hope that the government, Freeport, relevant associations, and all involved will synergize more intensively to ensure UMKM products in Mimika are more widely promoted. “Hopefully, we will all join hands to work together to invigorate UMKMs, to invigorate Mimika and all of us,” he exhorted.

A Freeport Indonesia PP-UMKM program participant, Hironimus Urmani said he joined the mentoring program in 2011 and has now learned much and has been entrusted to become self-reliant. As such he thanked Freeport for the guidance provided for himself and eight other entrepreneurs who have made the grade.

He went on to hope Freeport will continue to offer support to other entrepreneurs who have not as yet had the chance to join the program. He also thanked the government for the support afforded. “We 9 contractors offer our apologies if  we have made mistakes throughout the mentoring program in dealing with challenges,” he ended.
