In Support of XX National Sports week Freeport Contributes 6 Billion to Renovate MSC

20 May 2021

In an effort to successfully launch the 20th National Sports Week (PON XX), in particularly the Mimika cluster, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) will officially close all activities currently taking place at the sports complex for a whole month to carry out renovations. The athlete’s stadium of second class international standard will according to plans undergo a comprehensive renovation lasting for one month starting next June at the cost of Rp. 6 billion.

“The MSC was earlier utilized by the Mimika administration’s task force as an isolation place for Covid-19 patients. After renovations are completed it will be handed over to the regional government and the provincial government to be managed accordingly. It goes without saying we want to make sure the place will be handed over in appropriate condition. Because the task force had earlier transformed the building into two makeshift isolation shelters for a long time the building’s condition has declined. Wall paint was flaking, facilities like toilets became dysfunctional including the beds,” said Johnny Lingga, PTFI’s Vice President Government Relations (Govrel) on his cellphone when asked for confirmation by the media on Thursday (5/20).

Johnny explained the scope of renovations include the removal of mildew and fungus from the walls of the buildings and the facilities, also repairing cracks in buildings to mention a few. The renovation process will be a follow up of findings detected by a Technical Delegate Team (TD) of the All Indonesia Athletes Union (PASI) that also covers repair of facilities such as training facilities which must be brought back to original conditions, also access entrances specially customized for PON athletes later.

"So, this is going to be a massive renovation which is expected to be completed within two months. That’s why we close everything down temporarily with the full support of the authorities to enable the PON athletes in various sports branches to have access to brand new sports equipment,"he said. With regards to training sessions, the facilities can still be used including KONI internal matters that need to be addressed with Freeport

“The renovations are more or less confirmed to start June 1st. The entre sports complex will then be closed for the sake of safety. This is also one of the forms of our support to the Papua Provincial Government and the Mimika Regional Government and in our effort to achieve the highest laudation for PON,” he said. He is also hopeful that after the renovations are completed the Mimika community will guard this government asset to the best of their ability.

“To what extent management is implemented is the responsibility of both the provincial and regional governments. Reportedly PT Freeport Indonesia has channeled US$ 33 million, or an equivalent of Rp. 462 billion (based on the assumption US$ 1=Rp. 14,000) into the construction of the Mimika Sports Complex in Mimika, Papua.

The complex consists of an athletic stadium with a running carpet track imported from Germany with field grass imported from Switzerland.  The construction of the MSC has been financed by Freeport’s Corporate Social Responsibility/CSR budget. The groundbreaking area covers 12.5 hectares of land and was implemented in September 2013 with a building completion date in 2016.

The sports center comprises an athletic stadium including a field and tract court, a building housing basketball hall that can seat 5,500 spectators , a volley ball court, badminton court and other sports branches all in closed in spaces.  Other infrastructure consist of a hotel for male athletes and another for female athletes with an occupancy capacity of 50 persons complete with Wi-Fi facilities and Air Conditioning. Among other supporting facilities is a building for athletes’ activities and an amphitheater.
