President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated the construction of a copper smelter owned by PT Freeport Indonesia in Gresik Regency, East Java. This was marked by the laying of the first stone or groundbreaking on Tuesday, 12th October 2021. He said the smelter to be built is the largest in the world. During the construction process, it will also involve a lot of labor.
Jokowi said that at least during the construction period, Freeport's smelter construction would absorb 40,000 workers. "In the construction period alone there will be 40,000 workers. This means that there will be a lot of job opportunities in Gresik Regency and in East Java Province. Not to mention later, when it is operational," said Jokowi, on Tuesday, 12th October 2021.
He explained that the smelter to be built has a single line design. In the future, Freeport's smelter in Gresik will be the largest in the world because it is capable of processing 1.7 million tons of copper concentrate per year. From this processing capability, this smelter will produce 480, 000 tons of copper metal. Jokowi assessed that this was a huge potential for Indonesia to take advantage of. "You can imagine 1.7 million tons, that if the small truck is raised, which can carry 3-4 tons, it means how many trucks will be lined up here. That means there will be 600,000 trucks lined up, imagine. This is huge," he said.
He also hopes that with the presence of a domestic Freeport smelter, it will further strengthen the downstreaming of the copper industry. Therefore, he wants this smelter construction step to be followed by all mining companies. So that in the future, Indonesia will no longer export mining products in the form of raw materials, but those that have added value because they have been processed domestically. "This will provide added value for the country, meaning it will provide higher income for the country. Then also create more jobs. This is an important goal for the people, and of course makes our nation more independent, more advanced," concluded Jokowi.
