Investors Respond Positively to Freeport Indonesia’s USD 3 Billion Bonds

22 April 2022

Freeport McMoran Inc. says investors are welcoming the offer of global bonds worth USD 2 billion from PT Freeport Indonesia. According to Singapore Exchange, Freeport listed the bonds on 18 April 2022. "Richard Adkerson (Chairman & CEO Freeport McMoran) says investors have responded very positively, reflecting the business strength on which PTFI is based,” Freeport McMoran President Kathleen Quirk stated in the Q1-2022 earnings report as cited on 22 April 2022.

She said the corporate action was made for long-term financing for development of a smelter project in Indonesia. Freeport Indonesia issued the bonds under three varying tenors of 5 years, 10 years, and 30 years, respectively. “The average tenure is approximately 14 years, with coupons averaging 5.4 percent,” she disclosed.

Kathleen added, the corporate action is expected to be offset by phased elimination of five percent export duty. “So, there will be no economic impact from the smelter,” she closed. Freeport Indonesia is building a copper smelter with a capacity of 1.7 million tons per year in the Java Integrated Industrial Estate (JIIPE) in Gresik, East Java. The project is slated for completion in 2024.
