Linde Indonesia will supply high purity industrial gas to Freeport Indonesia. On Wednesday, July 20, Linde Indonesia announced the signing of a cooperation agreement to supply high purity industrial gas to PT Freeport Indonesia, a leading mining company in Indonesia.
Linde will invest more than US$100 million covering the construction, ownership management, and operation of an Air Separation Unit (ASU) to supply oxygen and nitrogen gas to a copper refining facility (smelter) in Manyar, Gresik, East Java.
The new copper smelter facility, the largest copper processing area in the world, will process concentrate obtained from the Grasberg mine managed by PT Freeport Indonesia, one of the world's largest gold and copper reserves.
Linde's newest regional facility is expected to be operational in mid-2024 and become one of Indonesia's largest air separation units (ASU).
The new air separation unit will arrive as a facility designed and adapted to run Linde's cutting-edge technology that delivers significantly improved energy efficiency. Oxygen gas from Linde is used to purify copper concentrate, one of the first steps in the copper cathode production process.
Copper cathode is used as a raw material in various industrial sectors, including the manufacture of wire, cable, and tubing. "We are proud to be able to support PT Freeport Indonesia in line with the company's initiatives to expand production capacity," said Vinayak Kembhavi, President Director of Linde Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam. "Copper plays an important role in the electrification of transportation and industrialization processes. We welcome to cooperate with PT Freeport Indonesia on this leading project."
This project is Linde's third large-scale investment in supporting the copper processing industry in Indonesia, where the company recently announced an expansion of its oxygen gas production capacity in Gresik, East Java.
