Mimika Coastal Sedimentation Mitigation Efforts, Freeport Builds Mini Petrol Station and Wholesale in Otakwa, Turnover Reaches Billion Rupiahs

13 June 2023

To mitigate tailings sedimentation for residents in coastal Mimika, PT Freeport Indonesia has conducted several programs. Among them is the construction of the Otakwa Hub, which is expected to help residents fulfill their needs and sell their catches.

PTFI CHD Manager, Daniel Perwira, said in addition to opening a shop as a wholesale center, a mini-petrol station was also built in Otakwa. This mini-petrol station also provides subsidized fuel such as Pertalite, which has the same price as Timika.

He explained that from September 2019 to December 2022, fuel sales at the Otakwa mini-petrol station reached 112.7 metric tons worth Rp 2.9 billion. "Most recently, we built the Pertalite mini-petrol station, providing fuel at the same price in Timika. Previously, gasoline was very difficult to obtain, and the price could be many times higher. With this mini POM, residents can get it at any time, and it can also be used for fishing," he said.

In addition, some wholesalers and kiosks provide materials needed by coastal residents, intending to increase the economic turnover in the local village and its surroundings so that the frequency of residents going to Timika City can be reduced. This costs a lot of money for transport, not to mention the labor and time it takes to stay overnight and buy food and drink. "We are currently building wholesalers that provide necessities at the same price as those in Timika. We built these kiosks on the east coast in Otakwa and Fanamo," he said.

It was noted, the achievement of Freeport's economic program in the period from September 2019 to December 2022 saw sales reach almost Rp 1 billion, or to be precise, Rp 900.7 million. "We are in the process of expanding both the building area and the additional items sold at the wholesaler. With the presence of this wholesaler, they can be productive again for activities in the village," said Daniel.

Another mitigation program is the provision of land transportation that serves the needs of Kamoro residents in five Daskam villages, namely Nayaro, Ayuka, Tipuka, Nawaripi, and Koperapoka. It operates five times a week. "In the coastal area, we help provide boats to help people who will travel from Poumako to Otakwa, Poumaku to Fanano, and Omawit twice a week," he said.
