MIND ID Fully Supports Establishment of an EV Battery Ecosystem Program

20 September 2022

State mining industry holding Mining Industry Indonesia (MIND ID) and its members PT Antam Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero), and PT Timah Tbk are committed to bring to bear the government’s commitment to establish a New and Renewable Energy Ecosystem. This is able to be realized thanks to collaboration and synergy among state enterprises, and government support for development of EV and Integrated EV Batteries.

The market trend for EV battery demand has been on the rise for the last two years. It is predicted that by 2035 global demand for EV batteries will have reached 5300 GWh, predominantly for electric vehicles, in particular four-wheeled vehicles.

In Indonesia itself, data indicate that by 2035, demand for EV batteries will reach 59 GWh, predominantly from the transportation sector. MIND ID and PT Antam Tbk have set up a subsidiary focusing on development of batteries in Indonesia, namely Indonesia Battery Company (IBC). IBC, which is only 1.5 years old has drawn up a roadmap for development of an EV Battery Ecosystem in Indonesia.

Activity will range from production of a battery prototype for electric engines, to developing an Energy Storage System, preparing facilities for processing nickel and raw materials for batteries, expanding production capacity, and mastering battery technology by 2030.

During a hearing held by House of Representatives Commission VII, MIND ID Director of Institutional Relations Dany Amrul Ichdan stated IBC is a vital pillar in realizing Renewable Energy in the EV Battery sector. "Additionally, we will be reinforcing our self-reliance, meaning we will be able to reduce dependence on imports and lower our carbon emissions rate as well as cut back on fuel subsidies,” Dany averred in a statement.

This is in light of current conditions wherein all necessary raw materials for EV Battery components, such as graphite, Lithium Hydroxide, Cobalt Sulphate, and Mangan Sulphate continue to be predominantly imported.

As such the government must ensure sufficient supplies of nickel as a raw material for manufacturing EV batteries, which will be 80% provided by PT Antam Tbk. "Given this situation, IBS has been targeted to become the market leader to supply EV batteries in Southeast Asia," Dany added.

In line with Regulation of the Coordinating Minister of Economy (Permenko) No.09 of 2022, development of an EV Battery industry is designated a National Strategic Project. To speed up realization, a consortium with LGES (LG Energy Solution) and CBL entities is needed.

Research and development will be vigorously maintained towards mastering EV Battery technology. IBC is engaging National Research and Innovation Agency BRIN and research institutions from universities such as ITB, UI, and UNS, as well as National Battery Research Institute. It is also deemed important to boost the quality of human resources in the EV Battery industry through various training and workshops.

"MIND ID fully supports the government program to establish an EV Battery Ecosystem that is a national strategic program. Support and synergy are needed to accelerate realization, among others through a policy to provide incentive and facilitation for an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem,” Dany ended.
