Minister Bahlil Visits Concentrate Processing Plant In Grasberg Area

16 August 2022

The Minister of Investment, or the Head of the Capital Investment Coordinating Board, Bahlil Lahadalia, and party reviewed the concentrate processing plant in the Grasberg area, owned by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in Grasberg, Mimika Regency, Papua on Tuesday.

During the visit, Minister Bahlil and his entourage witnessed firsthand the Elloco 09 Locomotive, which transports the concentrate in the Grasberg Block Cave Unloading Station 601, which is located at GBC Haulage 2760 Level. “What first surprised me was witnessing the technology that was built, thereby also believing that many people still do not understand in detail regarding the mining technology applied at Freeport, particularly in terms of the underground mine,” Bahlil told ANTARA News Agency on Tuesday.

According to Bahlil, the technology built and applied by PT Freeport is so extraordinary, thereby requiring to conduct a positive collaboration with the Indonesian Government in order to optimize the existing potential. “In addition to the extraordinary technology, it can be personally perceived when one visits Grasberg, it’s as if one is abroad,” he stated.

He explained the more so because said area was built by the offspring of the Republic of Indonesia, meaning that those who are employed there are not merely expatriates, but also the nation’s offspring, particularly ethnic Papuans, whereby a transfer of technology has taken place over a relatively lengthy period of time. “Therefore, when it is good for the country, why not optimize it,” stated the Minister of Investment.

Previously, Minister Bahlil sent off the departure of The Ajkwa, the ship carrying PT Freeport Indonesia’s copper concentrate from the Amamapare Port in Mimika, Papua on Monday (8/15). The departure of said ship constitutes part of copper concentrate shipments sent to the first copper smelter built by PT Freeport Indonesia and a Japanese Consortium in Gresik, East Java in 1996, and which is presently managed by PT Smelting.

The departure of The Ajkwa, as a feeder ship, carried 8.600 tons of copper concentrate to be transferred to The Naziha (ship) located in the deep sea, approximately 19 km away from the pier. The Naziha will store 26.500 tons of copper concentrate, which is subsequently to be transported to PT Smelting, and represents the 32nd shipment of concentrate executed to PT Smelting since January 2022.
