MSC Planned to Become an Athletic Development Center in Mimika

11 December 2021

Mimika Sport Complex (MSC) owned by PT Freeport Indonesia on Caritas street, Timika, Papua is planned to become a center for the development of athletic sports.

The utilization of facilities after the implementation of the Mimika Cluster XX National Sports Week (PON) based on a sports coaching program with the government has begun to plan, so that this facility will be like the Mimika Sport Complex (MSC) in the future.

"We want the expensive facilities built by PT Freeport Indonesia to be used as a means for athletic development and others," said Director of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), Claus Wamafma to Tribun-Papua.com, at the Rimba Papua Hotel, on Friday, 10th December 2021.

However, said Claus, all are still in the study stage, hopefully next year they will be able to start using MSC.

Claus said, currently communication with the government continues. Likewise with stakeholders related to the sports field in Mimika, the province, and the central government.

"The domain of speciality Freeport is not in sports coaching. However, with the facilities we feel it is important to develop it. Whether there will be an athletic championship event and it is still being seen what sports are suitable for Papuan children," he said.

He hopes that this plan can be completed next year in order to create talent for Papuan child athletes, especially Mimika, so that they can compete in the next national and international events.
