25 November 2021

The Representative Office of Bank Indonesia (BI) in Papua stated that the economic growth of the Papua Province in the third quarter of 2021 grew 14.54 percent. This figure is the highest compared to 33 other provinces in Indonesia. “Papua is the highest economic growth in Indonesia. We, in the third quarter, experienced 14.54 percent growth,” stated the Head of the Bank Indonesia Papua Representative Office, Naek Tigor Sinaga, in Jayapura, Wednesday (11/24).

The high economic growth of Papua, explained Tigor, was influenced by the performance of the mining sector which increased with the highest contribution from PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). In addition, the momentum of the National Sport Week or PON XX and the XVI National Paralympic Week or Pekan Paralimpiade Nasional (Peparnas) held in Papua, recently, also supported the economic growth in the region. “On record, the contribution of the mining sector to date reached 54.6 percent. Meanwhile, PON itself is considered to be the momentum of recovery of the non-mining sector,” he explained.

Bank Indonesia advises that economic practitioners in Papua can immediately integrate into the digital world, in order that economic growth may be sustained. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet, therefore digital economic activities are urgently required. “Digitalization is essential, specifically establishing of digital acceleration and expansion teams is key, because digital trends are becoming the driving forces, in addition to other productive efforts,” Tigor said.

Meanwhile, Papua Regional Secretary, M Ridwan Rumasukun, stated The Papua Provincial Administration continues to encourage synergies between stakeholders and business practitioners in order to be able to continue enhancing the economic growth. Despite having abundant natural resources, the Papua Provincial Administration wants the trade and production sectors to be increased in order to minimize Papua’s dependence from the mining sector. “As a result of the excellence of our human resources and our persistent determination to be better, I am confident the vision of Papua Bangkit, Mandiri dan Sejahtera (Arise, Self-sufficient and Prosperous) can be realized,” Ridwan concluded.
