PT Freeport Constructed Sport Complex of Rp. 400 Billion for PON 2020

10 February 2020

Since the establishment in 1973, PT Freeport Indonesia has constructed many things in Papua, particularly in Mimika, from infrastructure, human development and economy.

This is revealed by President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas, when becoming the speaker in Indonesia Millenial Summit 2020, Stage Visionary Leader in The Tribrata, Dharmawangsa, Jakarta, Friday (1/17/2020).

He discussed about Building Eastern Indonesia: No One Left Behind with Tumiyana, President Director of PT Wijaya Karya (Ltd) Go Public) and Erwin Aksa, Chairman of the Board of PT Bosowa Corporindo.

“In 1973, Papua has nothing, so we constructed all. Freeport constructed Mimika Airport, Two air trips to open community isolation were also constructed by Freeport, said a man with complete name Clayton Allen Wenas.

In terms of physical development, there are more than 3,000 public houses, streets, bridges and other infrastructres that have been constructed.

The latest, Freeport contributed to construct Mimika Sport Complex which is a sport facility center prepared for the host of PON 2020.

This will be one of the best Sport Centeres which we will give to the government for PON Papua 2020. The one that constructed it is also State Owned Enterprise with the value of Rp. 400 Billion, but it is not a matter of value, most importantly is the use since Papuan community really love sport,” he said.

1.  Freeport constructed infrastructure, economy and human in Papua

Tony said that PT Freeport starting 21st of December 2018, the 51 percent of which has been owned by Indonesia.

“It has been officially paid off, no one will, there is no longer any hint, it has been completed and has been going on well for one year,” he said.

According to him, in the case of construction, Freeport is not only constructing infrastructure but also economy as well as human development.

“In terms of infrastructure, when Freeport first operated in Papua in 1967, started to operate in 1973, nothing can be found there. So, we constructed everything. Not only for production need but also for the interest of its community. For instance, Binaka Airport was constructed by Freeport and two air trips existing in the mountain to open the isolation and of course there are 3,000 houses we constructed for people, streets, bridges and public facilities,” explain a man with glasses.

2.  Freeport has provided free medication for 20 years in Mimika

Last year, said Tony, PTFI has just completed constructing one sport complex with the name Binaka Sport Complex, the best international standard athletic stadium. We will give it to the government for PON 2020.

“The one which constructed is also State Owned Enterprise with the value of Rp. 400 Billion, but its not about the value, most importantly is the use since Papuan community really love sporyt,” he said.

Second is a matter of of human development which is very important. That human can only be felt constructive if, first he or she is healthy. Thus, our health program is really important. In Mimika, we constructed 1 Hospital and 5 clinics for community of 7 tribes in Mimika to have free medication and it has been going on for more than 20 years.

Thus, we keep empowering apart from  the department handling the community so that papuan community can be healthier. Once they are healthy, they can have education and next do economic activity.

3.  HDI in Mimika is higher than the national one

In educational sector, PTFI has allocated more than 10 thousand scholarships. There have been tens of school we constructed from Elementary School to Senior High School. We have also constructed training center hall.

We have educated 4 thousand Papuan indigenous community and 3 thousand of them work in PTFI and the remaining work in other mines all over Indonesia and we indeed feel that currently 40 percent of PTFI employees is Papuan indigenous.

Third is economy development itself. “Thus, our existence there created a kind of multiplayer effect and contribute to Papuan PDRB which is around 48 percent for the province and for Mimika District of around 94 percent of its PDRB from the economic activity of PT Freeport activity,”he explained.

Multiplayer effect is hugely felt and finally 200 UMKM of Papuan indigenous are created. In fact there are two Papuan indigenous entrepreneurs having Franchise business from America as well as suppliers that almost all Papuan indigenous including contractors to handle the work in Freeport.

And this is certainly hugely felt should it be seen from Human Development Index (HDI) existing in Mimika which is higher than the national one. Maybe we need to stop right here, we can further continue.

4.  PTFI will invest around US$ 20 billion for the next 20 years.

I already presented what we have done for infrastructure in Mimika area that we use together. We also constructed Regent Office, street to the port, port facility maintenance. Maybe most importantly as I said before that 51 percent of PTFI shares belongs to Indonesia and the 10 percent of which is Papuan, owned by provincial and district government and the ourcome will be more beneficial for Papua development itself.

We have invested in Papua of US$ 15 billion or around Rp. 200 trillions and next we will invest around US$ 20 billion for the next 20 years meaning that US$ 1 billion per year or around Rp. 14 – 15 trillion per year.

Of course, such big investment will create huge multiplayer effect and we regularly discuss with provincial and district governments to sinergize whta we are going to do next, do not let what Freeport does overlaps with what is done by the government vice versa.

Including in the implementation of PON Papua 2020, sinergy will be conducted between PT FI and provincial government of Papua so that the venues that will be constructed will not be overlapped including Freeport facility that can be used for PON 2020, for instance, golf course or football field.

“And of course, we have been in Papua for 52 years. Our love to Papua is really attached. We keep growing and developing with the local community,” he said.

5.  98 percent of Freeport workers are Indonesian Citizens

Apart from infrastructure development program, community growth is the commitment that we must trully conduct until we have completed there.

In 2018, our commitment in developing community reached Rp. 1.5 trillion. Should it be totaled from 1992, it reached Rp. 25 trillion and will be continued until the end of mining period.

Human Resources (HR) in Freeport is managed by 98 percent of Indonesian, including the leaders. Freeport itself has funded around 300 people. Thus, former Freeport employees working overseas to work in foreign mines.

I have presented that we have Mining Institute of Nemangkawi, a kind of Training Center Hall prepared for youngsters to be skillful workers. Although they only graduate from Junior High School, they can work in mining. How expert can work in other mines in Indonesia and in reality, many former Freeport workers work in Sulawesi, Kalimantan and Sumatera. This is our task,” he explained.

Tony also admitted that he joined Indonesian Mining Association which is the place to share which professional who want to work in other places. There is also Indonesian Mining Expert Association, the event to share information pertaining to mine potential and human potential so that the exchange of these mine experts can be fast to work on other mines in Indonesia.

6.  Invite foreign students to work in Freeport

As additional information that this Freeport has open pit and underground pit.The open pit is the second biggest in the world and the underground pit is the biggest in the world. So, this is like a university for underground miners. Once that complete their work in Freeport, they will easily work in other mines.

"Thus, just happened to be last December, I coordinated with foreign ministry. Almost 300 papuan students were successfuly gathered in America. On average, they almost complete their study, said the alumnus of this UI Law Faculty.

Freeport deliberately invited them for interview so that they are willing to return to Indonesia and working in Freeport.

“We often interact with Indonesian migrant workers. Thus, we can identify who have high potential and can return to Indonesia to build Indonesia. Thus, we have run this program, but need to be extended so that we it can attaract Indonesian youngsters to build Indonesia,” he said.
